MG TD TF 1500 - TF front hubnuts!
I ordered 2 new front hubnuts for my TF,as one was stripped,so thought better replace both! When they arrived, they were too big? I sent them back along with the stripped one, only to find out that the ones I need are from an early TD?? Its very possible that in its former life in the USA that both fronts were replaced, and early TD units were used. Maybe there is a TD out there with my TF's items as a mistake was made at a restorers years ago! Everything else on the car seems to be as it should be for a TF! Q?? When did the hubnuts change from 5/8" to 3/4" in size? |

Pilkie, the lug nuts were changed to SAE at TD/12285 in late 1951. Your brake drums are from an 'early' TD. Bud |

Cheers Bud. How can you tell the drums are TD? Pretty sure the studs are 1/2"unf not bsf! |

Bud, he is talking about the center spindle nut I think? The factory parts book lists a part number change for the steering knuckle at the same chassis as the lugnuts- maybe this was when the 5/8 to 3/4 change was made? George |

Sorry, Pilkie. George is correct. My mind replaced hubnuts nuts with lugnuts. Bud |

Hi Pilkie, I have seen this before when somebody did not read the MSM and tried to undo a TF LH nut the wrong way(and succeeded). The stub axle was then cleaned up and re-threaded down to 5/8". It is a good job the nut is made of a softer material than the stub axle. I was working on a friends car ( a recent import) and found that the RH nut had been stripped and all that was holding the drum on was the split pin!!!! Ray TF 2884 |

Hi Ray. That is a good possibility,as when it came off,it was obvious it was knackered! Fortunately I know which way to screw my nuts! Heres a pic of its progress, front wings went on today, fettle to fit tomorrow. |

Sadly a previous owner in the uk nicked its original, and running engine for his TC. It was imported in 1997 and had 3 owners before me,none of them started ant resto on it,but 2nd owner nicked engine. At least it is an MG engine/box,"Well Triumph"its from a 1974 MG midget 1500. Go here to read and see more about it! Its free to read, but forum layout a bit iffy at the moment! Enjoy... http://www.classicroverforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=12680 |
