MG TD TF 1500 - TF Fuel Pump?

I just read that the fuel pump for a TF is high pressure. Is this true? If so, how much increase in pressure over a "B" pump? Are these pumps similar to the conventional MGB pump? Are parts readily available for rebuilding? PJ
Paul Jennings

High Pressure is relative. When mounted low near the rear axle it still delivers 2-3 ibs/sq.in. to the carb bowls. It has to push the gas "uphill" by 2 feet so is higher pressure than the TD pump which delivers at the level of the carbs. ( About the same pressure as the pump on an MGB.)

( outlet pressure is about 0.75 lbs/sq.in. higher than the "low" pressure TD pump)

Paul - What year is your TF? The early (54 TFs up to car number 1500) used the same AUF 25, low pressure pump as the TD, with on output pressure of 1.5 psi. This pump was mounted on the firewall. Starting with car number 1501, the pump was changed to a AUA 54 mounted on the rear, right hand frame, close to the fuel tank. The AUA 54 pump had an output pressure of 2.7 psi and had a longer coil housing than the AUA 25, low pressure pump, but otherwise looked the same as the AUA 25. Later (I don't know exactly when) the high pressure pumps went to a shorter coil housing and had an output pressure of 3.8 psi. This later version went by various model numbers including AUA 150 and AUA 182. They also look exactly like the AUA 25, low pressure pumps. Repair parts are available from from Moss Motors, Victoria British, Abingdon Spares, Joe Curto and Burlen Fuel Systems. By the way, as an aside, the High pressure pumps can be used in the early TFs and all of the previous T series cars, but the low pressure pumps will not work with the later TFs. Cheers - Dave

Thanks Don and Dave! Dave I don't have the car yet. Will negotiate with owner next week after a business trip I have to make. I will buy a TF, it's just a matter of which one. I know of a good looking 54 that I can get for a very reasonable price, like $3500 less than the 55, but I'd prefer a 55/1500. I want one for a frame off restoration. Naturally, I'd like to get one that only needs cleaning and painting, but since I don't believe in fairy tales, I'm probably looking at a large expense and lot of work. I'm gathering info now and write down everything you fellows tell me and bookmark any web sites that have pertinent information. Thanks again to all who offer information and advise that is much appreciated. PJ

Just remember...doing a frame off will cost 'megabucks' and if there is a good running/restored one, sometimes its worth the extra $5000 instead of the $20,000 you will put into the frame off....

Defminitely go for the 1500, and make sure it is really a 1500 motor. Big difference in torque and driveability. Just my thoughts.

Where on the engine are the markings designating 1500? Does it say 1500 or a series type number/letter designation? PJ
Paul Jennings

The 1500 engine type is XPEG (XPAG for the 1250); XPEG numbers should match on the bulkhead ID plate and the brass engine ID plate on the engine, right front.

Paul - look on the front right hand crankcase, below the front carburetor (not a real easy place to see on a TF so have an inspection mirror). You should see a two piece, brass tag riveted to the crankcase - the main tag will be an octagon and in the center will be a smaller circular tag. The two tags together will read XPEG/TF/XXXX, the small circular tag having the engine type (XPEG)stamped on it. See attached photo. Cheers - Dave

Paul -- Just to be sure some PO did not install a 1250 engine and change the brass tag Dave showed you. The proper cyl. head will have the number AEF118 hand stamped near the right hand forward cyl.head nut. The block will have the cast-in number AEF117 on the left side behind the generator and partially hidden by the tappet cover. If these numbers are there you have a 1500 engine no mistake about it.

Thanks fellows, The information is well received. I am going to see the car on the 31st of this month, can't get there sooner, since the car is about 700 miles from me. Will post the results. PJ

Yeah, except my car had the correct AEF118 head sitting on an early TD engine, correct 1 1/2" SU carbs bolted to a 1 /14" intake manifold, so you never know ...
