MG TD TF 1500 - TF Fuel Tank End Panels
Frank Cronin's Birch Grey TF was a very original car before being repainted in the past year or so. Frank, could you confirm with me that the paint on the chromed fuel tank end panels of your car come up to the top edge and not just the inset panel area before repainting ?
My experience with 'Survivor' TFs is that the paint goes up to the edge of the panel. Not as pretty perhaps, however expediently done by the Factory this way. Matt. Magilton's original TF1500 depicts the above. Did TDs and TCs have the paint also going to the top edge line? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Rob, Unfortunately I don't have pictures of my tank panels but I do recall surviving paint going up to the edge. I will attach a couple of photos of the GOF 2013 Survivor in NY. Both TF's with original paint. First picture is TF 891. Frank TF1414 |

Hi Frank, Thankyou for your prompt response to my request on the fuel tank paint original detail. Great photos. On the Original mgtf midget website, the survivor red TF8541 also depicts the paint going to the top edge. Matt. M's TF9097 and also TF9052 have photos clearly showing the paint on the top edge. Hi All,
Just had a mate alert me to a 'MG Abingdon Factory(1950) show reel from the You Tube Pathe' historical MG series. Initially, the video shows a TD chassis being welded up. Further on in the video,TDs can be seen being run up onto a truck ready for transport. There is a great shot of the side/rear area of a Cream TD. it depicts the area of the side fuel tank end panel. The paint on the fuel tank end panel extends to the upper edge of the panel, not just the inset area. Bingo ! I am wondering if TCs also originally had the paint extending to the upper edges of this panel and not how they are now repainted ? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

I was told the method to paint the side panels by a well know car restorer in SA. He said to paint ALL the panel then with a rag soaked in thinners wipe off the chrome edge. There is no hard edge as there would be by masking off. Don TF 4887 |

Sounds like the way to go Don. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Don is correct. So many of us over restored this part of the car by carefully taping off the edges. This also leaves a rough edge at the place the rolled edge meets the panel.
So you you have your end panels replated just have them polish the flat part. You may even have to scuff sand the rolled part so the paint does not flake off. You won't need to wipe much if you only paint from one direction too. You'll just have to remove a lot of paint from the bottom and back. The "good" sides will be in the shadow of the edge. |
