MG TD TF 1500 - TF Hand Crank Clips?

I know this was discussed recently, but please bear with me. A question about how the hand crank clips were secured to the back panel was asked and I think someone said they were held on with bolts and capture nuts verses screws. I can't find the article, so does anyone know the bolt size and type and where the capture nuts can be purchased? I'm assuming their very small. Mine had wood type screws holding them and they pulled out. They weren't placed properly anyway. PJ

Paul, I think they were just held with wood screws.

Paul,

My TD had the original screws in place and I don't think the installation was any different than yours. They were about a #6 or #8x3/4 inch round head wood screw with a straight slot and were "blued". There were no captured nuts or bolts. When I re-upholstered the seat back there were only the screw holes in the back. The back was original to the car(53 TD) If the TF installation is different then disregard the above info. My crank is just held in place with three clips. Two on the long straight portion and one on the short section.

Dan, Thanks for your input.

Mark, My crank was mounted on an angle and used three clips. It had screws holding the clips, but were not the correct screws, (hardware store type). It was the comment of using bolts/screws with capture nuts that threw me off. Thanks for getting me back on track. PJ

If you are reading this, would you mind attaching a photo of your TF crank in place?
Thank you.

Here we go. I am not convinced I have the correct starter handle, I think it should be a little longer and possibly have a steel handgrip.

Cheers,
Matthew.

I have the same handle as you, Matthew. Bought mine from Moss, with brass handle. When looking at your picture I realize why I was unable to locate my handle on the backing plate in my TF, as i do not have the crescent shaped cutaways in the top wooden member that you have. happily, the handle fits nicely into the front of the side screen compartment together with the screens, so that is where I will keep it.

I enclose an off topic pic, showing Vera in front of the Oslo Opera house. Stopped for a photo session yesterday, in +2 Celcius. Yes, there is ice on the water in front of the Opera house, which is acually built on the sea bottom of old Oslo harbour. It is of course leaking (as the Sydney opera, but from below) and in the process of preparing the building site large amounts of mediaval age remnants were brought to the surface, plus wrecks of some German war planes and a couple of undetonated British bombs, dropped there by Mosquitos during WW2.

Vera and I did 50 very cold hood down kilometres yesterday. She seems to be less asthmatic with Vokes air filters instead of the Hellings and Stellings one that are now on the shelf in my garage.

regards,

Jan

Matthew, My starter handle is identical to yours with the brass grip. PJ

Thanks Matthew
My TF has the same crank and handle, but is mounted upside down. Makes sense to place it this way with the handle tucked up into that right top corner notch.

I mention the handle beacuse I have seem some on unrestored late TF's that were steel. I am thinking they started off as brass on most of the T types, but went to steel before the MGA?

The clip screws on my 1250 TF are as described my Mark Strang. The original crank on my car has a brass handle.

Matthew, Amazing what we pick up on when completely on a different subject. I noticed that your tank strap screws are visible. Mine were covered over with vinyl upholstery. Were mine wrong, were they originally exposed? PJ
Paul J

Paul, On the TF they are exposed phillips head with washers painted interior color. The nut on the outside at the tank strap is a chrome acorn nut.

Dan Hanson

Dan is correct. Lid hinges also painted to match.

Mine was same as Matthew's ..uh, until I changed it.
Made my curtain boot bigger so it would not fit on back wall of boot.
Have it mounted to the lid now. I know it's not "correct" ...but it holds the lid up nicely making it easier to get the curtains and spares in & out now.
Better than using my forehead!
