MG TD TF 1500 - TF Instrument Panel Trim Piece

My TF came with an after-market wood dash, which is trashed. I don't think the instrument panel trim piece is original. It appears to be aluminum. Does anyone have a photo of an original trim piece? It's probably going to be tough finding a replacement.
thanks, Tyler

this is the scarcest piece on a TF, followed only by the octagon instrument trim

Good luck!!!!

There is a complete panel and instrument cluster on "Fleabay" at present. You will need very deep pockets I think a grand might win it.

For that sort of money I would be seeking the services of a good sheet metal worker or a wrecked MG Y that has the same instrument configuration.

Someone within this group may know if the original drawings for the panel were saved into some historical archive, that would make duplication a simpler task.

There is a guy here in Aus who does this type of fabrication for classic vehicles.

Kilmartin Sheet Metal of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, produce this panel (and others). They deal worldwide. I have no idea on costs.

Usual declaimer - no personal interest, etc.

It's a pitty your posting wasn't last week. I was at the mg spares Day at Stoneleigh Park and there were at least two dealers with TF instruments and dash parts for sale. They ranged from a complete dash (c£600), gauges and octagonal bezels. I didn't take any names but another reader may have. My find of the day, or possibly the year, was TF petrol cap complete with the MG logo on the catch - not bad for £15.

Tyler,
Have you checked Abingdon spares?
Believe they pop up there sometimes (pricey as I recall). Keep watching Feebay ...and good luck.

Certainly doesn't hurt to mention it here...12+ years ago a member sent me one!
David Sheward

Thanks Lan for the link! Searching through the list of parts they have, I was impressed at what appears to be the top quality of the items listed. Had I known the quality of this side panel, I might have ordered a pair from them instead of Moss. The quality of the Moss panel does not compare with the quality of this side panel. PJ

Paul,
Interesting that that panel is not drilled for mounting holes.

Paul,
Interesting that that panel is not drilled for mounting holes.

Actually Dave, I noticed that, not really be a bad idea, a sheet metal punch can put them where needed and maybe larger holes for different type fasteners. PJ

Does anyone have a photo of the chromed trim piece by itself? I'd like to see its shape, and if any mounting tabs are attached.
thanks,
Tyler

Tyler, I am having what appears to be the same problem, as my trim piece is in not so good shape and a couple tabs are broken off. I have come to the conclusion that this is about the hardest piece to find for a TF. Be nice to know if someone made them, but haven't a clue who! PJ

Tyler,
Been looking through old pics ...but no luck. Not even a pic of the back of it.
If memory serves (12+ years ago) ...small tabs hold it in place.
BTW: make sure you take the panel down to bare metal. Anything "thicker" than coat of primer & coat of paint and it won't fit.
That is why mine was discarded by the DPO!
David Sheward

Tyler, here is a picture of the dash trim. Need any others? It "simply" snaps in place over the metal dash.
Cheers, Hugh

The chrome trim surround bead has a flange completely around it that fits under the cluster panel.
The octagon trim pieces have tabs that bend around the hole and break off easily.
Don Harmer

Hmmmm,
Some folks say it has mounting tabs. Others say: no mounting tabs. Any other photos out there?
thanks,
Tyler
C.T. Irwin

The trim that surrounds the whole panel has no tabs and is held in place by the panel itself, the individual intrument trims have 4 tabs on each.

No tabs on mine. Has a recess that the panel sits in. The octagons have the tabs.

MG LaVerne

My center piece trim is broken in half at the bottom and my instrument trim pieces have most of the tabs missing. PJ

"If memory serves (12+ years ago) ...small tabs hold it in place."

Obviously ....it didn't!

Now that I seen another ...yep that is the way mine was also!
David Sheward

I have more info about the trim. Please see the new reactivated post. Tyler
