MG TD TF 1500 - TF Intake Manifold
I happen to have two pretty original 1500 TFs in the shop right now, and I noticed that both have the 168434 1-1/2" intake manifold, as they should. But both manifolds have the fingers, as used to support the air filter in the Mark II TD and TF1250, and it leads me to wonder if ALL TF's used the manifold with the fingers? I don't remember ever noticing one without the fingers, as I think of it. What do TF owners say? Thanks. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom - My TF-1500 #TF7211, build date 23-Sep-1954, has the same 168434 1-1/2" intake manifold as the 1500s in your shop. It has the lugs for a TD air filter. Slight disclaimer - my engine had a 22952 (TC / early TD) head when I bought the car. But I don't believe that the intake manifold was changed when the 22952 head was installed. FYI - The engine now has an AEF118 head which is correct for a TF-1500. Lonnie TF7211 |

... which begs the question:- What is the difference between the TF1500 AEF118, and the standard XPAG intake manifold SA2204? The casting nbrs are the same - 168422 Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Tom, I also have the fingers on my manifold. 168434 TF1500 #8257....25Nov54. Mike |

My TF 1500 has the fingers. I have never seen a TD or TF manifold without them! |

TF 1250 & 1500 had the same air filters as far as I know, so the manifold should be the same. |

James - quite right; the TF1250 also used the pancake filter. My error. Gord - that is my ultimate question, what IS different? - as the great Edwin Starr so profoundly said, I believe the answer is "absolutely nothing ..." I have been thinking about this (I know - get a life...), and went to my favorite and most authoritative resource, the Inter-web, and came up with this usually-correct page: http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/intake_manifolds.htm It reports that there is a distinct TF1500 168422 intake WITHOUT the ears, and I questions that. I'm going to wait for a few more replies, and will then try to get it changed, unless someone can come up with opposing evidence. Thank you all. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I have yet to see an XPEG without the flange on the intake. |

I believe that many of the part numbers changed as Nuffield evolved into BMC and came under Austin influence. Matthew. |

Bud - the consensus seems to be that nobody has ever seen a TF manifold w/o the "fingers." Is it worth changing, or at least adding a cautionary note, to the ttalk info page? One could say that there does not appear to be a 168422 intake manifold for the TF engine, without the "fingers," and that original cars examined have manifolds with the fingers in place. Makes sense me, Tom.. I'll add such a note to Sara's text. Bud |
