MG TD TF 1500 - TF missing upholstery panel
Hello All Happy New Year Can anyone guide me to the site or knows the measurements of the upholstered fibreboard panel that sits above the screen compartment and screws to the back of the tank board. When I purchased the car the P/O did not have it fitted. Most sites I have researched do not refer to this and it did not come with the Moss Kit. I could guess size but prefer to keep all things original as possible Thanks in advance Rgds Blair Robson |

Blair I can help with the size and the attachment details, screws etc, Originally it was made of fibreboard, but they tend curl up and not sit flat. |

Hello Rod Thanks for the reply. I meant to reply to one of your comments recently but got tied up. I remember your participation with Tim Gibbs as navigator oh for the good Escort days. Will Email you at the business or if you can send the info to blairr at clear dot net dot nz would be OK. Rgds Blair Robson |

Sorry Bob Wasn"t trying to short cut the site info but I have spent some time trying different sites aka Dave Braun's wonderful TD site, numerous other places but nobody has made reference to this area.I am sure Rob will post it but if it isn't I will when the info is available Blair R |

Hi Blair, I just measured the approx size of the fibreboard supplied in the M. Collingburn(UK) interior kit I have used for my TFs. It is 828mm(32.6") in length and 170mm(6.7") wide. Sizing of the fibreboard piece is all very well, however you need to ensure the distance between the underside of the upper cross wood beam and the rear metal cross piece of the sidescreen box is Factory size. This can vary in a 'naughty way' particularly if the car has had new wood inserted.Close fitting edges here will give that professional look. Incidentally, this distance is also critical for the correct fitting up of the Crankhandle! Hope this is of some assistance. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Rob. Do you have on the fitting of the panel how many screws were used, their size and the position of them and also the c/handle clips I have completely rewooded so I will need to double check before recovering the panel. Surprised that Moss does not have this in their kit or refer to it. Cost saving!!?. Your point on the crank handle fitting, I checked all my boxes and find I do not have one, clips only that had been screwed to the tank board, so I will need to get one. I guess that is something I should have thought of earlier. Many thanks Blair R TF6275 |

Blair from more than one original fibre boards they all measure 828mm x 167mm. Rob is correct about sizing to fit the available gap. We cut ours to fit allowing for the trim material to glue back underneath. It has occurred to me that only about 8% of the TF's we have restored had the original rear three pieces of fibre board and the two wooden blocks, so I have taken an image of two original sets showing the blocks attached and separated. I do have a drawing showing all of the hole positions, just need to locate it. The crank handle position was oppositely located for LHD and RHD cars. The handle is always taken from the near side, gutter side, I assume a safety measure preventing the user from opening the drivers door from the traffic side. (on RHD cars its removed from opening the LH door) See second image for a RHD car. |

Rob, there is a bit in the archives on nearside access for the crank handle and it seems that lots of North American export cars have theirs on the off side (or the same side as ours). Matthew. |

Mathew, Do you mean for 'Rod'? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

My TF 8353, has the crank mounted the same as in Rods photo. As far as I know, the car was initially sold here in the states. PJ |

Blair, Go to 'The Original MG midget' site and click on 'Gallery'. Look for the photos Frank Cronin took of the 'unrestored'TF9052 and you will see a shot of the orientation of the screw(4) positions holding the back fibreboard in place. Also,if you then move to the article on the Seat and Interior Re-trimming of an mgtf, there is another photo of the back fibreboard plus a corner trim. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Athos"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Apologies Rob, I meant Rod. Matthew. |

I have examined some original fibreboard panels and have found they all seem to have the holes punched. TF1500 #8947 a LH Drive car from USA indeed had the covering on the same side as the RH Drive cars. It would seem the decision of the trim person which side was covered that determined the crank handle position. You learn something every day. |

When the body left the bodyworks, was there any indication to tell if the body was for LHD or RHD fitting? Maybe that was left to the Abingdon factory? Would save some logistics problems. Items like the indicator switch could have been done at the factory. Matthew. |
