MG TD TF 1500 - TF original interior?
What material was used in the TFs original interior panels and seats? A combo of vinyl and leather or just leather? PJ |
Paul sr |
Leather seats (seating area), vinyl (rexine) panels and trim. The piping at the top of the door panel was also leather. Dan H. |

I believe the piping at the top of the map pockets was also leather as well. Alex |

Paul, Originally with TF interiors, leather on seats, top of door 'pocket'piping also leather, and the upper edge aspect of the door trim piping was leather. The rest from memory was Rexine,an old version of our modern day vinyl. The seat backs were Rexine and the metal turn up into which sits the seat's cushion frame, was also covered in Rexine.Through cunning MG Factory expediency, approx. the first FRONT third area covering the cushion sides, were in leather. However, the remaining cushion sides were done in Rexine. Many restorers these days like covering the rubber Crash Roll in leather, but they were originally covered in Rexine. Paul for a nice looking job,it is important to affix the seat backs a la Factory.Tacks were not visible here! You need to carefully set and angle inward all the pins in place on the seat's backing piece, then use a wood block to hit the edges onto the wooden laths.Looks neat. Hope this helps. Rob Grantham TF3719("Athos"),TF9177("Aramis"). |

Hi again Paul, I could help you out further by supplying you with a complete seat and interior restoration guide. This article was written about 25 years ago.John Lambie,a fellow TF enthusiast and restorer here in Western Australia wrote the first part on complete seat restoration whilst I did the second part on all the restoration methods and tips of the TF interior. There is even a measurement given for each of the Vinyl(Rexine)pieces that need to be cut out. Some of the guides and tips are very useful and not found in any books! When the right materials and methods are applied,I have found there are no gaps between panels and the finish is as good as the Factory. No wrinkles anywhere! Over the years with our TFs,I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to purchase M.Collingburn TF Interior and Seat Kits.(UK). These kits are of truly excellent quality with the cushion pleats and squab pleats being correctly piped in with suitable stuffing like the good old Factory days. I have no doubt I have probably re invented the wheel here, and the USA and Canadian boys already have loads of info. on this topic. Cheers for now. Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177(Athos"). |

Hi All, I am hoping this note gets through to bbs td tf now. Today is the first time I could not respond to your requests as the system would not allow me to enter my note to you. It has been suggested that his article may be easier to access if it was included in The Original TF midget site under 'Details'.We will explore this method after updating the article next week. Cheers for now. Rob Grantham |

Rob, I'll be waiting to see it on the TF site or by email at irwin51@yahoo.com. I'm getting close to attacking the interior on the TF. By the way, what is the recommended wood for the lathe in the seat frames (etc.)? Does anyone have a good source? thanks, Tyler |

Hi All, At this juncture you may have thought I had forgotten about the TF Interior Re Trim article. However,as promised I have now finished updating the article written some years ago and also included some photographs of various aspects of the finished product. The article is written in two(2)parts. In Part1 John Lambie describes methods for rebuilding TF Seats, and in Part2,Rob Grantham looks at the TF Interior restoration processes. We will possibly get the article placed on The Original mgtf Midget site for easier access.Yet again Chris Couper has offered his input in this regard over the next couple of weeks. We are hoping this will be of assistance to TFers although many of the principles involved move across all T Types. Cheers for now. Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF("Athos"). |
