MG TD TF 1500 - TF petcock thread size ??

I’m finding it difficult to reconcile a big difference in prices for the TF radiator petcock. Abingdon wants $28. By the time I get this to Canada, its going to cost me over $50 Can. landed here in Rockburn.

A very similar item from AliExpress costs $1.99. Have a look at:-

The catch is however - thread size. Does anyone know the thread of the TF petcock?

I just repaired a similar item on my Jag MK2. It was 1/4 inch -19 threads per inch BSPP. The same as an air compressor fitting.

Not the same car I know but I bet a lot of these are interchangeable. You could check what size the hole is by gently threading a male air compressor fitting.

If you are replacing it because it was lost then if you can't get a specific answer from the forum ( and I bet you do) then for the few $ involved I'd by the Aliexpress one.

If you are replacing it because it is leaking it is possible to refurbish them.

See here the job I did on my Jag.

Are you really serious, what sort of quality do you expect for $1.99, for that price get it, take it apart to see how well it's made and how quickly or not the varnish wears off and report back.

It could be the bargain of a lifetime, or not, for $1.99 it's worth the experiment and education, let us know how you get on.

Gord,
It is 1/4" BSPP.

Gord,

The thread size is 1/4" BSPP part no 3H576. If you want to use the Alibabba in your link, one you will need an adapter.

Here's one that will fit.

Thanks Declan,

I had seen that one earlier, but just needed some confirmation on size. I've just ordered 3.

Will let everybody know, how it works out.

And Nigel: You're probably right. So I opted for the quality one at $2.36 Cdn. Tnx for the advice.

To Dave Moore,

Sorry - didn't mean to ignore you. I happened to have my new alloy radiator in my living room, and found some compressor fittings. You're right of course, but all the fittings I have are tapered and until Declan replied, was skeptical..

It is definitely 1/4" BSPP not tapered. I have just checked it. It is the same as on the 1275 midget engine and I have one sitting on the bench in my garage.

Gord,
you've done right, best to pay more for better quality.😁

Who knows, sometimes these things aren't bad, and you've increased your odds by upping the price and quantity.

If it was me I'd order the $28 to find the one I get is no good. This happened with a heater tap I got (for my 1973, 1275 Midget) from a previously good manufacturer but it's replacement years later leaked. As usual I was told no one else had complained, had I checked this, that and the other on my car, I did and sent photos to prove it. I got an under warranty replacement at my cost of returning the faulty one, and that replacement leaked. I gave up and try not to notice the small leak.

It'd only add insult to injury if your $2.36 tap is good and reliable but I'd still be happy for you and interested to know.

Cheers.

Coming from China - probably a "slow boat". If and when it gets here, I advise on the quality. Its for my new alloy rad.
