MG TD TF 1500 - TF - Rear Fender Guards
Hello Everyone, I am interested in locating some rear fender stone guards for my TF 1500 and wondered if anyone knew of a source. Several years ago, I remember seeing a TF with some in cast aluminum (with MG logo) and have not seen any since. I prefer those without an MG logo, but I have never seen any. For some reason I seem to remember that these were produced in Australia - but I may be wrong. Items are similar to those seen in attached photo on a BMW 328. Thanks in advance, |

Stamped aluminium.

Thanks Laverne! Those are the ones. Any ideas on where these can be sourced? |

From Australia, and hard to come by these days.

For no other reason than bragging rights I still have the following all purchased from Monaro Motors (Peter Manton)in Melbourne: Brooklands steering wheel Aero Screens Oil Filter Cannister (I'm not using it tho') Oil Filler Cap Grab (Panic) Handle Peter TC9356 |

I meant to add to my post that, other than the cast alloy oil filter canister, the other items are firmly affixed to my TC. Peter TC9356 |

Tom Lange tlange@acadia.net is a great person for getting things made. I would also be interested in a pair for my TF 1500. Stamped or unstamped. Maybe we could persuade him? |

I have a pair of guards, very much like Laverne's. Sorry, the photo needs rotation. Bought them in 2011 from MG Spare Parts & Services in Smithfield NSW, Australia. You can google them to see if still in business. I too thought they were quite simple stamped affairs, and that someone could copy them. They look great. I'm surprised an american outfit did not make them, back in the day. Tom '54 TF |

They are about 18ga. Aluminum, pretty rough when new. Most of the ones I've seen have been polished. That area of the Rear Wing takes a beating from stones and gravel. I imagine the Aluminum will bear the scars as well...but perhaps not so obviously. Mike-TF8257 |

The last two people I sent to Tom's source came up empty. |

Monaro Motors add from 1955. I still have the aero screens fitted to my TF. Matthew. |

Matthew, I have a pair of Brooklands like those. I haven't yet had the courage to drill 8 holes in the Scuttle. I would love to see pictures of your mounting. Mike-TF8257 |

It may be something that Kilmartin Sheet Metal in Ballarat Victoria may be interested in reproducing. They make many items for Austin Healeys and MGs. I will give them a call tomorrow. I have two pairs of the guards. one pair is very tatty and the other pair quite good. I am yet to make up my mind whether to put the better pair on my car. |

I think the Monaro Stoneguards were originally affixed to the rear guard with flat head, aluminium rivets. The Monaro Aeroscreens, usually had three(3) affixing bolts per screen only. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

I originally saw these while peruesing some of the Aussie T club sites Rob. Seemed to quite a number of TF's with them. It was hard to determine exactly what they were fixed with but as near as I could see it looked like a number were held in place with simple screws. I used large head rivets as I thought it would hold better. I have a friend who had some made for his TA but as you can see it's a much less complicated shape. |

Wonderful feedback on the guards - the ad from Monero Motors mentions a "satin" finish and I think this is the look I had remembered on the TF I saw that had the guards. I agree that a current source would be welcomed and I think the producer would would find that a good market exists for them. Thanks for all of the comments, |
DLD |
I spoke to Kilmartin's and it is not something they are interested in making. They said tooling costs would be too expensive. |

"the ad from Monero Motors mentions a "satin" finish and I think this is the look I had remembered on the TF I saw that had the guards." You are correct DLD. This is what they looked like new. Mike-TF8257 |

You are right Mike. I think the "satin" finish is just rough aluminum. They were probably made on the cheap. Can't imagine anyone choosing to mount them with such a rough finish. LaVerne told me he put hours into polishing his. I took mine out and paid 50 bucks to have them polished. (see above posted pic) Tom '54 TF |
