MG TD TF 1500 - TF Seat Back Angle
Hi All, In my opinion, the seating position of the TC and TD are much more comfortable than the TF because the seat back angle can be adjusted. In my case, the bolt-upright position of the my TF's seatback wreaks havoc on what is left of my lumbar spine after just a few miles. I would like increase the squab-to-seatback angle and have some recline when I drive. But, I would like to be able to return it to it's something-less-than-90-degree-angle for showing. Has anybody out there done this type of modification to the seat? Thanks, Greg TF HDC46 6846 XPEG 797 TC 6669 XPAG 7170 |

Just a thought: Could you place some sort of wooden wedge between the seat and the floor to tilt the seat back? (Assuming that you have enough space between your knees and the steering wheel) Otherwise I would suggest a custom made seat for use between shows. I am suprised that your seat back is 'bolt upright', have you tried out other TF seats for comparison? Matthew. TF 9097 |

Greg, I know of two methods to alter the angle of the seat back. The first (recommended by B&G) is to take the seat apart, break the weld between base and back and re-weld to the angle that suits you. The advantage is that it will look almost exactly like the original. The second is to make up some wooden wedges to fit between the seat and the runner. These sould be tapered so as to raise the front of the base by about 2". Clearly this doesn't alter the angle between seat and base, but avoids major surgery to the seat frame while giving a more comfortable ride. But probably the best idea of all is to fit a set of more modern adjustable seats such as those from the MGB. Purists don't like this because the seat backs are higher and alter the attractive lines of the car in profile. I guess I'm becoming a purist, 'cos I do agree with them - hence I have stuck with the original design - but I fitted new seats from Moss last season, and these are MUCH more comfortable than the 49 year old pair they replaced. Your choice.....AB |

Greg, I have installed tapered wedges on both my TF and TD made from 2 inch square timber a little longer than the runners and sawn diagonally along its length. Cover them in something the same colour as your carpets ( mine are black ) and bolt through at the front hinge and screw through the runner at the back. This has the effect of increasing the inclination of the seat back but also providing extra support to the the legs behind the knees. Rgds David Tinker. Wales UK |

You cannot fiddle with these seat back angles, they were designed to keep us Brits with straight backs and stiff upper lips. No slouchers allowed driving these MG's. Gaw'd! What's the world coming too. We have little problem reeling of a 100 miles without getting back aches. Try driving a MOG and see what happens to you. |
