MG TD TF 1500 - TF Speedo cable routing

Little problem...

The speedo cable went again, after only a couple thousand miles. The break was about 6 inches from the gearbox. Had a chat with the guy at Moss and a local garage and both said the TF speedo cable should be routed through a hole in the chassis above teh brake master cylinder and then behind the pedal box beneath the firewall and so to the bulkhead. I found the route OK, but maybe because my car is a LHD convert - so the pedal box was welded on after original build, the cable would not fit. I take the point though - the route is a lot less bendy than otherwise. I have now routed the cable along the chassis and allowed the floorboard to ride on top of it at the front. This is a bit of a kludge and I am concerned it might damage the cable in the long run. Any ideas?

Paul......we have a left hand drive 55 TF 1250 and the speedo cable goes through the right side of the firewall right next to the windscreen wiper motor and toward the center of the car. It then goes down vertically between the two stay tubes, inside the edge of the frame and into the gearbox.

Yes, the rest of the routing is exactly as you describe. The outlet from the gearbox is only about 5 inches from the chassis. If the cable goes inside the chassis towards the firewall then it has to form a "swan neck" to fit inside the frames. If it passes through the hole in the inner web of the chassis then the bend is much looser, but on a RHD car the cable has to pass between the chassis inner web and the inside of the pedal box. Ours is welded to the frame along the top of the box and leaves about 1/8 inch too small a gap to pass the speedo cable, but the brake lines go through OK of course.

Passing below the chassis puts a sharp bend in the vertical direction, but lying on top of the frame allows a gentler curve. I am wondering whether to rout out a groove in the flooring panel to allow the floor to fit snugly over the cable and flush to the chassis. I guess if this cable survives longer than teh last its a mod I might well do. Much easier than rewelding the pedal box!!
