MG TD TF 1500 - TF starter pinion
I've read in manuals that the pinion on a TF starter has 9 teeth and the ring gear 120 teeth. Recently I purchased a reconditioned starter with 10 teeth having been assured that the 10 tooth pinion is ok. I checked with another retailer and was likewise assured that the 9 and 10 tooth pinions were interchangeable.. I'm still unsure! Will the 10 tooth pinion cause any problems? Thanks |

Steve, i don't think this will cause any porblems. Just the 10 teeth starter will let the gearring faster around. I asume the teeth of the starter fit in the teeth of the gear ring. |

Steve: Looks like you have the correct 10 tooth pinion gear. The 9 tooth is for a TC starter with a 93 tooth ring gear while the 10 tooth requires a 120 ring gear as used on a TF. The pinions are not interchangeable without changing the ring gear. You might check the date on the starter motor itself. Later M35G starters for a midget or Sprite look the same but have a different mounting bracket and will not fit a XPAG engine. Terry |
