MG TD TF 1500 - TF tonneau and fittings??
Hi all. Ive just had my tonneau delivered for the TF,and have a Q before I start fitting it??? How many fittings should there be for the tonneau? ie locating pegs, lift the dot fasteners, etc Are some of the pegs points used for the hood and sidescreens only? Cheers Dave |

Depends on whether you have a half tonneau or a full tonneau. I'm betting that there is a lot of variability in how these are installed. The hood has two snap fasteners, one on each side, that go to the lower corners and are installed in the wood pieces that go on top of the tub. I think one of the websites of a BBS member shows this. The sidescreens only have one snap fastener for each of the front sidescreens and this fastener goes inside the door on the upholstery. Attached is a picture showing the pegs and fasteners on a half tonneau, and the pegs on the door for the full tonneau. There are 4-6 more across the top of the tub up front.

Here is a full tonneau shot...not 100% complete for all the pegs, but it's what I have. It was tough to get this to fit as the steering wheel sticks up and there is no "pocket" for it. These are Moss tonneaus, by the way. Mike

I have,I believe 24 tonneau fixing points on my car! Most info I can find says there should be from 18-24 fixing points! The tonneau maker has supplies just 12 lift the dots! This sems to me the bare minimum! To stop it blowing off or flapping while driving I think would need a few more than 12!!. I have asked them to send appropriate fixings,ie another 12!! |

12 is what I have on my TF. 3 on each side of the cowl. One above the door hinge on each side of the tub. One at the top front of the tub one each side and one at the rear of the tub on each side about in line with the edge of the fuel tank.

None of the tonneau fixings are used for the hood or side screens.

I reused the existing holes at the rear and as seen they are to low. I don't know if the TF came originally with only the short compartment cover but I suspect that it did. In that case it may have only had 4 originally. Matthew or Gordon would be a suggested reference for original. Many have added snaps or studs added to the doors as Mike has done for a better weather fix. The tonneaus are designed to accommadate the hood which you don't have so it's likely to be a little sloppy on the rear of the tub.

This has come up a few times on this BBS. Answer is always the same. The majority of these were dealer and/or aftermarket install so there really isn't a definitive answer! Mine are pretty much in the same place as LaVerne's on my TF. Seems to be a fairly "accepted" configuration from old photos I have seen. IMHO: Don't care for the "look" of having them on the doors. In your case with no windscreen or hood you may want to do a little different install. Think I would go for the "min" amount and see how it works. Much easier to add some more than take them away! If I was doing this again I think I would go with snaps across the back of the boot for both my hood and tonneau using the same "pattern". IMHO: Would make it a cleaner install. |

Here is a pic of mine Dave, just installed this winter. Posts total 20, 4 on each side(8), 4 on back and 8 across the dash. The posts were there from PO. Old tonneau was rotted. Cheers Tim |

Will fit with the 12 I have for now,and see how it goes! Hopefully they will send another 12,as I dont want a lot of holes left! |

The tonneau cover LTD stud locations aren't as arbitrary as one might think. When I finally got Lazarus on the road in 1965 I bought a new tonneau cover at the Plymouth GOF. I installed the LTD fasteners onto the cover to match the studs that were on Lazarus when I bought him. In January I needed to drive the53 to a state inspection station. I installed an LTD stud into each of the holes in the tub and dug out Lazarus' tonneau cover. Every one of the fasteners matched up with the appropriate stud. That included the stud holes in the 'tublet' that I imported from Texas. The big conumdrum is one of the chicken and the egg if you have a tub with no holes and a new cover. Bud |

Whoops. That Plymoth GOF was in 1995, not 1965. Bud |

My TF came with a lot of studs that must have been installed in the old days. Rather than weld all the holes shut and grind away. I just put new ones in to match a new tonneau. They were not necessarily symmetrical from side to side, for sure! Mike |

Dealer agrees that the tonneau supplier/maker only sends the barest minimum suitable if the tonneau is newly fitted to a car! Thinks they should ask how many fixings are needed if its a replacement tonneau as the quantity varies!! The additional extra cost for 12 fittings is irrelevant when spending £200++! They are sending me the extra I need. Hope to fit it today. |
