MG TD TF 1500 - TF Windscreen Wipers
I have mentioned elsewhere that I am just back from a tour of the Scottish Highlands and unfortunately it rained. I was able to use the TF's wipers but found it quite dangerous fiddling with the knob in the cubby hole with my hand through the steering wheel spokes. I believe the dog clutches for the two wipers are there only for parking the blades. Has anyone considered, or better still carried out a conversion, to MGB style self parking wipers? I am thinking about using a later style motor with the parking switch but retaining the TF's rack and wheel boxes. I would leave the dog clutches permanently engaged and fit a discrete switch under the dash. It would also be possible to use a double throw switch for a single sweep of the blades.

Jan. Its all been done. I converted to two speed wipers used a 14W motor, which I believe is the same as in the MGB. It would also park, but did so on the screen and I would rather the wipers were not on the screen, so would release the dog clutches and move them down. The switch was under the dash. I have removed that set-up now and gone to a DR2 motor (MGA type), which is single speed. I prefer the look and its still way more powerful that the original wiper motor. Dave H |

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the prompt reply. My main issue is poking my hand through the steering wheel to turn on the wipers whilst I am driving. If it was a modern car it would be classed as illegal. I am not too bothered about self parking even though it would be useful. An easily accessible flick switch so I could nudge the wipers out of vision would be fine. This could double up as single sweep facility. I take your point regarding the power of the motor. I will keep a look out for a more modern motor but with a square rather than round case. If it is a self parker that would be great. I do know that the sweep angle can be changed by moving the pivot point of the crank in the motor so there is a nice wee project on the horizon. Jan |

Look for a DR2 motor from an MGA and mount a new switch under the dash. It will also park. Dave H |

Like Dave, I installed a MGA DR-2 wiper motor and the difference in performance is amazing! I modified mine to mount in the same holes as the original, the unknowing eye would never know the differance. Here's a couple pics. PJ |
