MG TD TF 1500 - TF wiring loom
I am fitting a new bespoke braid on braid wiring loom to my RH 1955 TF1500. On near side, loom splits after fuse "box" with main part going along chassis rail to back of car. The rest contains wiring for side and head lights and is attached to engine bay side panel before going through into wheel arch. I have another branch which contains wiring for both horns and fog light, but can't remember how it is routed. I think it goes along the chassis rail on inside and then over steering rack and down to horns. My old loom, being replaced now, is not original and is not suitable as a reference point. If anyone has an unrestored reference TF, or an "original" TF could they kindly advise how I should route this part of the loom. Thanks guys. Neil. |

Hi Neil I am doing exactly the same job on my RH drive TF here in Ireland. Just finished installing the rear wiring loom but now have no idea how the front loom goes to the horns so interested to hear the response also. Regards Darryl |

Unfortunately it doesn't, Dave. The section I need is below the coil, where the loom splits into 3 sections: one to the back of the car, one along the side panel to the lights, and the one I need information about which feeds the horns, fog light, and probably the dynamo. Ok, I've had a look at my car and will attempt to describe how it goes. One branch of the loom goes forwards along the left bonnet side and connects to the coil, dynamo, etc. Thr other branch goes down, then forwards along the inside of the chassis, parallel with the brake line (I attached it to the brake line). It then goes up and over the front cross chassis member, passing under the nearside engine mounting frame, then along the top of the steering rack to the horns. I'm not saying its exactly as original, but its as close as I could work out at the time. Dave H |

Thanks for the information, very helpful Dave. Comments from the Octagon Club Facebook page has also thrown up solutions. The consensus seems to be that the loom splits just below the coil or fuse "box"; main loom continues along inside of chassis to rear of car with a connection off for the hydraulic brake switch; the second branch goes along the engine side panel with breakout for the coil and dynamo and then splits in two before going through a hole into the wing underside for the side and headlights.; the third branch exits the loom just above the front portion of the chassis rail in the engine bay and proceeds over the front main cross frame (which supports the engine) and splits for the two horns and fog light if fitted (this section is supported with P clips under the front apron). On the right hand side there is only one branch of the loom emerging behind the wiper motor (TF car) but it follows a similar path. Both the upper looms in the engine bay - which feed the lights etc - have breakouts for earth wires that are attached to one side panel / wing bolt on each side. Fog and spot lights if fitted are earthed to screws along the rear edge of the apron, one each side. Neil. |

THIS IS FOR A LT. HAND DRIVE CAR. TF 6688 AFTER THE LOOM SPLITS, WIRING FORWARD IS ON TOP OF THE FRAME UNTIL IT GETS NEXT TO STAY TUBE. IT IS ATTACHED TO THE TUBE BY A FLAT METAL STRAP. IT WRAPS OVER THE STAY TUBE. IT IS NEXT TO THE STEERING SHAFT. IT THEN GOES UNDER THE CROSS FRAME MEMBER,ACROSS THE TOP OF THE RUBBER RACK BOOT, WITH ONE LINE MAKING A 90 DEG BEND, AND THEN GOING ACROSS THE RACK ASSY. WHERE IT SECURED TO BY TWO FLAT METAL STRAPS. IT SPLITS OFF TO THE 2 HORNS |

Colin, I think I can see the plastic/vinyl tube encasing the loom, ending just after the steering rack, is that right? Looks about the same on my car. Matthew. |

Matthew............nice to hear from you, long time no contact. Yes, the loom does have plastic sleeve over it. I think this was done because the steering shaft interferes with the loom where it crosses over and it shows some wear from the turning shaft. Its amazing to be taking 6688 apart after 53 years. I was thinking about who put it all together. Untouched for all these years. car has very little corrosion and came apart relatively easily. I have issue with valve guide chip that in bedded itself in the no.2 piston and caused a lot of oil blow by. Update on the loom. Picture shows a small metal clp attached to the frame which holds the loom to top of the frame. Its hard to see, but it's in the center of the bend in wiring. Nikons take good pictures. |

Mine is strapped to the cross bracing. Not sure I like the idea of fixing it to the brake pipes. It's then run along the back of the steering rack to give it some protection.. A |
