MG TD TF 1500 - Thank You David DuBois

David,

I was recently looking for information on the engine fasteners for the XPAG. I normally go by the TABC.org list but it didn't have the studs for the exhaust manifold listed so I had to ask for help. Bill Hyatt sent me this link:

http://www.mgexperience.net/article/xpag-xpeg-fasteners.html

which I found had been submitted by you.

Thanks for making public such a tremendous asset.

Gene - Glad that the information is of help - that's why I posted it on various web sites. I have that list, plus other fastener information and fuel pump information on my new web site (thanks to my wife's work in designing it) at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Cheers - Dave

Thank you David DuBois too. I have often turned to your fastner list, and other things too, when working on my chassis and engine. Also, for those who don't know, Dave has a nifty brake light relay which mounts right next to the brake switch. Your original switch might last years, but the replacements are suspect. By not passing the full system current through the switch, they will outlast the car. It's right there in his new website.

Would you please post the link to Dave's brake light relay? I could only find the link to Dave's generic article, "Brake Light Relay."

Thanks.

Hi Larry,

http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/Other_Subjects/Electrical/General/Brake_Light_Relay.pdf

Is the link I was talking about. On the first page, he has an offer to purchase one from him, on the next pages, he tells you how to build and wire your own.

warm regards,

My question was prompted by curiosity about whether someone had a means of protecting the relay from the elements. Looking at the pictures at Bud's link, the relay seems vulnerable. Since the TD does not have a visual or audible method to signal the driver that the brake lights aren't working (as in a modern car), it is desirable to make the relay as weather-tight and reliable as possible. I'm unfamiliar with the range of automotive relays and wonder if a particular unit is better than another in this regard or if there is a really small project box into which the relay and electical connections can be mounted.

Larry -

I mounted my relay near the direction logic control box under the dash for exactly the reason you stated. Makes the wiring a little more complex but the relay is high and dry.

Larry - The relay that I use is one of the Bosch style relays (also called an ice cube relay or it's small cube shape). I have the relay attached to the inside of the frame rail, close to the brake light switch and have not had any problem with its getting wet in the past ten or so years that I have had it installed, in spite of our driving the car year around in the Puget Sound region of Washington state (the rain capitol of the country. If you are concerned about weather damaging the relay, Janson's mounting would be the way to go. Not for weather concerns, but because I had become absolutely paranoid about the brake light switch failing (after 3 or 4 failures in a very short period of time), I installed a tattle tale light under the dash on both our TD and MGB that monitors voltage to the brake lights (at the output of the relay) so I can see when voltage is present (see the attached picture).
