MG TD TF 1500 - Thanks, I needed that!

Hello All,

Well it's about 19 degrees F outside, and I was getting bummed out over the frozen forecast for the next two weeks. So I took the TF out for a ride, with hood down and tonneau in "racing" position. I got back and I couldn't move my lips, but it sure was fun!

Good show Greg! We just got back from a local Register meeting in Tacoma, about 30 miles from home. Made the round trip in the TD, but then we did it with the hood up and in weather that is nowhere as severe as yours. Still, great fun. Cheers - Dave

Hmmmm....a "challange?"
Waiting for the freezing rain due an hour after the 7" of snow this afternoon.
Greg....was that with windscreen in the "down poss"?

Greg ....Good show! Had the TF out myself before the latest snowfall with the temp about 25. Balaclava with leather flying helmet, jacket gloves windscreen down just the aero screens. Now know how Shackletons boys felt on the Endurace!!! Great Fun for short rides, frozen grin for sure!

Dave D., Isn't Tacoma right on I-5? I'm impressed that your out there on the "big" highway!

David S., That snow and freezing rain will reach us overnight and tomorrow. I'm going to get one more ride in tho', to get milk before they run out. Windscreen up! Stay warm.

My outing for the Sunday papers on a clear 32 F morning turned out to be quite a trial. I couldn't see a thing due to misting up. We've got a cold spell forecast next week so I removed the bumpers and will take them for re-chroming tomorrow. I'm going to miss my daily fix while the the TF is grounded for the next three weeks.

Greg - Part of our trip was on I5, the rest on State Route 16 which is also freeway. We had just had a discussion with another member at the meeting about driving freeways and he asked if we wern't bothered by trucks. In fact, transitioning from SR 16 to I5 on the way to the meeting we had to merge next directly behind an 18 wheeler. We have never been intimidated by the trucks out here and, in fact feel safer traveling with them than around the big RVs that are driven, for the most part by older people with no training in the handling of big rigs. We have taken the TD on 2 5000+ mile trips through the Western US and have never had any trouble on the freeways, but then we are real die hards when it comes to the MGs. Cheers - Dave

Whatever the weather, I love driving with the aeroscreen. Have one on the TC but not the TF. It's my preferred way of driving the TC, but sadly, it's out of commission with something wrong in the diff. Hopefully something simple like pinion bearings, but I just can't get the nerve up to lay down on a 20 degree garage floor!

Greg - "I just can't get the nerve up to lay down on a 20 degree garage floor!" Don't blame you on that. Good grief, if you worked up a sweat, you would freeze to the floor and couldn't get up ; ). Dave

Iced up spectacles could be another problem!

You did say iced up "SPECTACLES" didn't you?, if it were a similar sounding word it could be quite painful!!

I tend to lie on the garage floor, not sit on it!

Hey Greg,

Maybe the problem with your differential is the oil thickening from the low temperatures? Even my daily driver was struggling due to the exceptionally low temperatures that we've been having.

Hi Ira,

Well I pulled the differential and at least part of the problem was virtually no gear oil in the differential (what was there was sort of a cold, thickened blob in the bottom of the housing)! The gears are really worn. I'm bummed.

Another surprise is that it wasn't a TC differential, but apparently a Sprite/midget modified to fit the TC axle housing. But it's with a 4.55:1 ratio, which explains why it was so nice on the highway, but so sluggish on the hills.

Whatever, back on the road by Spring or bust!

Greg,

Well, if it isn't too worn, you can try adding oil and seeing if it works. In warmer weather you could use a heavier oil.

It finally got warm today, but the roads are full of salt. I'm bummed, since I wanted to take the MGA out.

You can easily find midget parts. Since it's in the TC case, who would know?
