MG TD TF 1500 - The curse

I often say the every computer has a little devil residing inside. Sometimes this devil laughs and says "today I shall have some fun here".
Well. I have got an MG devil. If you have time, read this story.
Last year, before putting the car away for the winter, I discovered that both screws that connect the wiper connecting rod with the wiper arm were broken. When I took one of it out in my dark parking lot in my building, I was unable to retrieve it. I searched for it for a couple of hours under and around my car.
Then I have tried during the winter to find one. Nobody was selling it, and they still don't know what I am talking about. It does not show up in any catalogues.
Thank heaven that gblawson in this forum showed a picture from his car, with exactly the same fastening screw. See image 1 here:

Then Brian Warmuth suggested I find a mechanic who could make me one. And I did! An old schoolfriend had been a teacher for mechanics. He is retired, but he can still go to the school and do some work. And he did! The only thing, he could not make that whole for the splint. I therefore took this little item to my mg specialist. Sitting in a chair in his small office, I suddenly noticed that the screw was not in my hand. A new search started I must say that the office is not very tidy).
Again I/we searched. I mean, how far can it go when you lose it from your hand or lap? Well, I searched for two hours, came back the next day. Searched for another hour.
No screw. I have not dared to tell my mechanic friend.
So now I am back at the starting point. Here is what Anglo-Parts say in a mail today:
"You can take a look in our online PDF CATALOGUE for MG TD on page 90.
There you will see the central connecting rod nr 19 connected to the wiper
arm nr 12 with a SPLIT PIN.
The wiper arm is connected to the wiper blade with a RUBBER PLUG nr 15 in
the picture.
So, no srews".
My image of the whole business here (the screw in the image is of a wrong dimension. I guess I have to talk to my mechanic friend once more. The correct dimension of the d... screw is M 0,5 x 3).
PS. I usually don't lose things!

Hi. Raymond,

I am probably missing something, but why not buying the whole connecting bar which connects to the wiper arms (not the wiper blades) from Moss. I think that this ensemble includes the two wicked and prone-to-disappear screws? (When I ordered this part several years ago it came with the screws). They sell it for 13.65 GBP, which is probably cheaper than machining two so tiny screws and getting them chromed.

It would seem to me that the screw and even the wiper linkage parts would not be in great demand and that there should be some derelect TD's in wrecking yards that would still have some of these parts/screws on them. I know there is demand for wiper motors but probably not so much for linkages. You might also try contacting one of the people who are parting out TD's on Ebay.
A. R. Todd

Hi Jesus,
this is what I have been asking Anglo Parts and Moss about. But Moss never answers! Of course, if the connecting bar comes with the screws, I shall order one immediately. I only wish they would answer me.
But now that you tell me they probably come with the bar, I shall jump at it. Thank you very much!

I just called Moss, Bradford, as they seem to be the T specialists. And I got a straight answer: "Sorry, but you are stuck there". The two screws do not sell with the rod. Nobody has them.
Well, at least I know!

Raymond - Try contacting the three people listed here. they all repair the wiper motors and 'might' have what you are looking for in their junk drawers.

PS - Did you look in the cuff of the pants you were wearing when the pieces disappeared?

Raymond,

Sorry to know that Moss do not include the screws with the arm. In 2002 they did.

Have you tried the following sources:
- Brown and Gammons at www.ukmgparts.co.uk, part number 138621
- The MG Octagon Car Club at www.mgoctagoncarclub.com part number SWS024

Regards.

David, my trouser had no cuffs and yes, I looked very thoroughly through my jacket. I swept the dirty floor all around and went through the heap I gathered millimeter by millimeter. I stripped when I got home and looked for the screw. Nothing. Mystical.
Yesterday I called my mechanic friend and told him what happened. We shall meet and he will make me two more.
Puhhh...

Jesus,
today I received another email from Moss-Europe. They tell me, as you said, the the screws come with the connecting rod. When I told him someone else at Moss said they did not, he answered "
They look at the earlier connecting bar and not the later one which is
correct for you".
So now I am ordering! Thanks to you! Once more, many thanks, Jesus.
Regards,
Raymond

Raymond,

Hopefully you are done with this issue, but just in case, right now there is a bid in ebay USA with some components for the wiper mechanism, that may include those tiny screws. Ebay item number is 250629373431.
