MG TD TF 1500 - The Fastest MG Ever

This came up in a conversation a while back. What was the fastest time an MG engined car was ever recorded? Maybe Bonneville or MGs test track in the UK? PJ

How about 254 MPG, 1959 Phill Hill.

I believe it was Phil Hill who said in all his years of racing, the fastest he ever drove was in an M.G.

What I find interesting is the similarity of this MG body with that of the much later MB and Auto Union, streamlined "Silver Arrows" designed for the Banked German track in the the late thirties.

Remember the MG body was designed in the late 20's almost 10 years earlier.

Maybe that would be because the British mind has the unusual capability of inventing things. The German mind has an unusual discipline that allows for the "perfection" of things once they are invented.

Those of you who know me, know that one of my fund-raising tricks, is to hold an “MG Quiz”. I held one at the MG International in Gatlinburg, TN in 2006, another at the MG International in Reno NV in 2011, and most recently, at the 50th Anniversary of the NEMGTR in Middlebury, VT in 2014. We have them too, in our own Montreal MG Car Club, winter meetings - not much else to do!!

So, here’s today’s MG Quiz question ...

Name the model of MG that is the fastest PRODUCTION MG; name the speed and where it happened.

(Sorry, no case of Canadian wine, like the last occasions)

I’ll weigh in later, if nobody comes up with the correct answer.

MG Maestro 6R4? Yeah, I know, a purpose-built race car, but it was homologated so it technically was a production car.

A fellow brought one to the MGVR races in Hallett, OK, years ago. Amazing vehicle.
David Littlefield

The fastest road going MG must be the MGB RV8. A fellow TF owner up the road from me has one and has just fitted electric power steering. He says it is a wonderful car.

My wife's Mg Maestro turbo was pretty quick - top speed 132mph which is not quite as quick as the RV8, but still lots of fun. Lots of torque steer. It would go sideways rather than forwards from a standing start in the wet!
DM Gibson

Nobody's even close.

Bear in mind this is a Production MG. Even though the 6R4 was quick, it doesn't come close to the 225 MPH of the car that did it!

This is MG was a production model and except for the brake parachute, and moon hub caps you couldn't tell by looking at it - no wings and only a small air inlet on the bonnet. Even the headlamps were exposed.

If you are referring to the MG-ZT Bonneville car, I think you would be hard put to call it a "production" car.

"So in 2002, MG Rover approached the legendary, California-based, So-Cal Speed Shop to build and run the car. Custom car specialists So-Cal are professional land speed racers, well known for their Bonneville achievements in the late-forties and early-fifties.

Roush Performance was chosen for the powertrain development and they delivered an awesome 6.0-litre V8 with electronic fuel injection that develops 765 horsepower without the aid of an intercooler, let alone a blower or turbo. More than enough, it was felt, to propel the ZT-T to its goal of 200 mph."
David Littlefield

Bingo David!

Nevertheless, it was based on a production MG and So-Cal was mandated to retain its production appearance.

Its interesting to note that the true production ZT came with a 4.6 litre Ford Mustang motor with manual 6-speed, or an autobox. This model - the 260, as it came from the factory, could do 155 mph. Even by Yank standards, that's for sure "haulin' ass!"

In the production interval of 2001 to 2005, a total of 27,159 were made when production ceased. It became part of the Chinese MG production but was considerably watered-down, and known as the MG7
