MG TD TF 1500 - The Order of Things
Been working on making/installing the53's floorboards lately. Started wondering when I can reasonably install them without making another installation more difficult. Dawned on me that there are no existing holes for mounting the running boards. Would be easier to get the holes aligned if I have easy access to both sides of the frame and quarter panels if the floorboards aren't in the way.. Oh, but the front and rear fenders are critical in locating the running boards. By the time I got ready to think of drilling the running board mounting holes I found myself looking at a tub replete with two front fenders, two headlights, two running boards and two rear fenders. All that just to drill 6 holes. Spent a lot of time hunting 5/16-22 x 3/4" screws. Gonna' hate to have to pull it all apart tomorrow. Bud

Bud, I just installed my running boards with the floorboards already installed. The original holes were still there and in good shape. 4 of the holes were drilled from the factory at a 20 degree angle, interesting. Mike |

Hi Bud, there is one more party involved: the bonnet. In the end there is a gap between the bonnet-lids and the frontfenders which should not be too big. So, that co-controlls the location of the fender which co-controlls the location of the runningboards...Good luck and lots of patience, Huib |

You're lucky, Mike. I have no holes for guidance. It's really a challenge to guide the running board mounting holes so as to come through the bottom main timber, below the main frame rail by just enough for a flat washer around the bolt. Huib, I did consider the bonnet aspect and decided to just cross my fingers from that standpoint. The tolerance provided by the size of the mounting holes should compensate for it. (I hope.) Bud |

You know, I never gave it much thought but when I did mine there were a few holes at odd angles for whatever reason. Strange little cars. |

Hello Bud Over the years I've re-conditioned several cars .Two of them being M.G.'s . While originality is important I do believe this emphasis is taken to the extremes. It over shadows in my judgement much more important issues such as safety, serviceability, new automotive technology, environment. materials, creativity and so forth and so forth. Let it not be misunderstood that I'm throwing out the book on originality . In the case of your floor boards incorporate into their design avoidance features on all of the issues you raised in you thread. I've just finished installing floor boards on the T.F. I'm currently re-conditioning with their design reflecting most of the issues fore-mentioned. More than likely they will never have to changed again. Now .if some judge wants to subtract points because stainless steel hardware has been used in corrosive prone areas as a example . WELL SO BE IT John |

John, this has nothing to do with originality, just practicality. Like learning to install the lift-the-dot studs onto the scuttle ramp before you attach the scuttle ramp to the firewall. Bud |

I had to punch out some of the old bolts holding the running boards on and found them not to be perpendicular to the frame. some of them at odd angles. was wierd, wonder what the Brits were thinking at the time. |
