MG TD TF 1500 - The way is was, and should be
Dear All, We run a company here in the UK called Vintage MG Parts and I have noticed that our global website hits have rocketed recently and managed to establish why, hence I add this thread. I am delighted that your Forum found our site www.vintageMGparts.com and it was nice to read the comments regarding the engine noises in the video link. These little 850cc J type engines can really go and we have added another clip or two for those who may not have found them in the Links section. There is now a Link on the Family History Section (see first topic post above) and the first J type going up the hill is actually unsupercharged and on standard 1 inch carbs. The engine is however highly developed and unleashes some of the potential in these little power units. We as a company are starting to stray into providing some T type parts and already supply hubs, halfshafts and spinners for T types and at prices generally unmatched elsewhere. We hope we may be able to assist some of you fellow T type owners as our parts range expands. We have at the moment for instance some high quality TC sidescreen frames, perfectly jigged up and powder coated in the original beige. We only have 3 sets and these will not be placed on the site. We do also own a concours TC, so we are not purely pre-war! http://www.vintagemgparts.com/family_MG_history.html Kind regards Rich www.vintageMGparts.com |

What a great sound |

I thought the same thing...nice little ride around the area. |

Geoff, Great sound. amazing how some cars seem to have a "voice". I used to love the sound of my old MGBs. I heard a rumor that the folks at Mazda tuned their origional Miata exhaust to sound like a "B". I always enjoy going under a bridge with my TD, so I can hear the exhaust note echoing around! Several years ago, when I visited AirVenture, in Oshkosh, Wi., for the first time, I saw a couple of vendors selling audio cd's of old piston aircraft sounds. Evidently, we are not the only crazy ones! |

Some where in my collection of old 33rpm records I have one with nothing but old MG cars. The typical English announcer says "now this is a 1933?????" and so on. I will find it and pass the info on. Sandy |

Steve and Sandy, I wholeheartedly agree about going under bridges. Close to where I live there is an 80 year old railway bridge/tunnel under which 18 wheelers habitually get stuck. My TD has a blower on it and, if I time it right, in second gear at about 2300 rpm, the reverberation is a delight. Turns a lot of heads in sealed airconditioned SUVs. I also had a CD called Vanishing Sounds of Britain put out by Auntie BBC. Amongst noises of steam locomotives and train wheels screaming around certain curves on lines somewhere in rural GB, church bells ringing the changes, barrel organs, PLUS the exciting and awe inspiring sound of a Merlin engine attached to a Spitfire performing aerobatics, are some sounds of MGs in hill climbs. I have misplaced it but if I ever find it I'll advise. |

A couple of years ago, our local airport using airport transfers tonbridge hosted a gathering of WWII warbirds to honor memorial day. I had the good fortune of standing at the approach end of the runway as an Avro Lancaster came in to land. It flew right over me at about 50'. Try to imagine the sound of 4 Merlins in tight formation! It was like music, but awesomely powerful; literally shaking the ground and me! |

If you drive along the Niagara River Parkway into Niagara Falls...you go under a couple hundred feet of the Rainbow Bridge... i'm always in 2nd at the beginning and just hit 3rd about 3/4 way through...think the Falls is loud????? Also in the Falls is that little Air Museum I posted a couple of years ago... A spitfire, a Hurricane and an ME109...they put on displays with the three of them chasing each other about 400 feet above the ground... life just doesn't get any more thrilling then that... |

Gordon, ... "A Spitfire, a Hurricane and an ME109...they put on displays with the three of them chasing each other about 400 feet above the ground... life just doesn't get any more thrilling then that..." Perhaps for the pilots 68 years ago?? I used to watch them as I grew up in London. A very noisy few years! |

Thanks for the post. Really neat. George |

Could you imagine how "exciting" it must have been to the German population, when a few hundred Lancs, Forts or Liberators approached while preparing to drop bombs? I've been told by survivors that the sound was terrifying. |

During WW-2 I lived 10 miles west of Dorval Quebec airport (Montreal) Our neighbor was a ferry pilot that went to Toronto every morning and at noon would return to Dorval bringing a new Dehavilland Mosquito. Again in the late afternoon he would bring another . Each day his home was buzzed at about 500 feet altitude twice. What a sound with those Merlins growling. In 1948 I went to work for Trans Canada Airlines and the North Stars with 4 Merlins. (Canadian version of DC-4)Spent a lot of time with those supercharged jewels. Sandy Sanders |

Sandy, I hate to keep going on about something that is off-topic, but I don't have your email and I am curious about these transport Merlins. How long could these engines run between overhauls? I know that many of the current day Mustang Merlins have "transport" heads. Is this an effort to prolong their service life, or is it a case of them being the only ones that are currently available? |

Mr. Hardy I wanted to thank you for the enjoyable video's and also for your services. Those of us who own MG's owe our enjoyment to companies like yours that supply us with parts. Glad to hear that you are expanding into some of the T parts. Perhaps we can convince you to help us with some of the items for the T's that are becoming hard to get. |

Excellent, really enjoyed this one! So why has it taken me so long to say so? OK...I can finally come out of the closet! Years ago I made a mini-disc recording of my TF. (Shortly after installing a Period Randot resonator to the exhaust that really enhances the "note".) Prior to that a I worn ear plugs when mowing the grass as the ranch king's blades make a fairly hi-pitched noise. Yep, when I cut the grass now I've got me Little Izzy's motor in my ears. (Warning: this is sometimes a problem as I find myself attempting to run through the gears to match the sound in my ears! Also find myself "cornering a little too robustly" for yard work. LOL) Since this post has kind of drifted off subject to airplanes... My job is that of an audio engineer/mixer, (mostly for live television events). In 2007 I had the pleasure of working a wonderful event near Columbus,Oh. "Gathering OF Mustangs & Legends". First time in many years there have been this many P-51's in the air at the same time. The sounds were incredible. I believe they are selling DVD copies of the event and you can find quite a few "clips" for viewing from here: http://www.gml2007.com/ Enjoy, David |

Hello Bruce and friends. May my wife Jill and I thank you for all your nice comments. They are very much appreciated as we are a small company who work wholly independently (by choice) of our major competitors and try to offer what they cannot in terms of parts quality, design improvements where necessary and innovation. We also try to keep our prices highly competitive and we usually can as we make many of our own parts in-house as a sideline business and we also have lower overheads. We always like to keep one step ahead of the competition also! We have quite a few projects in development at the moment as we like to keep the website fresh and moving. However, if there are any T type parts which any of you are having problems sourcing in terms of availability of general quality then if you would like to email any suggestions then where there is a common request we can possibly look at assisting We have already received orders today from your T type network and would like to thank G E Love for finding our website and raisin this topic otherwise we would never have found you. Thanks you all once again for your nice comments and we are now looking into the possibility of giving T type owners your own special Gallery on the website as after all, an MG is an MG Regards to all Richard Hardy and Jill Cook |

Just to let you know, we have set up a new T type Visitors Gallery on the website for those who would like to email their photos to us. We just need to know your name, model and country and Jill will upload the photos periodically in batches Kind regards Rich www.vintageMGparts.com |
