MG TD TF 1500 - thermostat ID help please
Greetings all, I restored my car over 35 years ago and until now could not remember if I installed a thermostat in the car or left it out and installed a blanking plate on the by pass outlet instead. Well, today I answered that question and now would like to know if the thermostat in the attached picture is suitable for my TD Mk II. Its definitely not the original bellows type. It has a split brass sleeve on the bottom, and the by-pass outlet is pre cast with a slot restriction about 1/4" wide. The top of the thermostat plate is stamped "WAXSTAT" and "33" and the bottom is stamped "ENGLAND. The plate has a 3/16" hole in it with a jiggle pin in it. The whole housing appears to be cast aluminum. Can anyone tell me what I have here and how to test it? I know that you are supposed to put these in boiling water and check the temp when the thing starts to open. But where to look for the movement-- top or bottom? Thanks for your help. Bryan |

Moss or somebody sold those years ago. The split brass sleeve just holds a regular modern type thermostat up in the casting. Heat in water in a saucepan, with a candy or some other type of thermometer. It will likely open at 160-180 degrees, well before boiling. You will see the center part move and open up. Best to wait until wife is not home if going to do in kitchen. George |
