MG TD TF 1500 - tickler pins/overflow pipes
gents, as i was reading ..and rereading the setting the float level thread..a thought occurred to me..as this is a rare event for me i always try to stop and take note. this time it was in regard to the tickler and over flow vent pipe arrangement MG used on the XPAG. i have read many times on this forum about the error MG made when they designed the float bowl lid..as the over flow pipes are above the tickler pin..as evidence of MG's mistake posters have posited that later lids were reengineered to correct their "mistake". i never gave this much additional thought..none really.it seemed to make sense...until i was setting/checking the float level on my car..holding the tickler pin down to fill the float bowl...when i noticed that the fuel was not coming out the tickler pin, not coming out the vent/over flow pipe, but pouring out the jet...now the needle was not in place as i had the piston out, but my question..how long would the engine continue to run if the needle stuck and the float bowl filled? long trip to get to my point, but, as i said ..a thought does not occur to me all that often. thank you. regards, tom |

" in regard to the tickler and over flow vent pipe arrangement MG used on the XPAG. i have read many times on this forum about the error MG made when they designed the float bowl lid..as the over flow pipes are above the tickler pin.." It is interesting that this arrangement is always blamed on MG. MG did not design the carburetors, SU did. MG only used the SU carburetors made by someone else. Credit (blame) where credit (blame) is due. Cheers - Dave |

Gents, The car would not continue to run long except if the float valve stuck with the throttle way open. Probably stall quickly when slowing to a stop. A warning from the school of hard knocks. Do not leave the key in the ignition switch when unattended. My cat played with the key fob and turned on the fuel pump. An open (stuck) float valve allowed several gallons of fuel to pump into the rear carb where it flowed through the intake manifold and open intake valve. I discovered it on checking the oil level prior to start-up. Had to drain and refill the crankcase. PITA. Regards, Jim Haskins 1953 TD |
