MG TD TF 1500 - ticktickticktickticktickticktick

That's the noise I hear when I'm driving, a ticking noise that goes at the speed of the engine, up and down as you accelerate - and only when moving. It sounds like its coming from the dashboard, not the engine, so my first thought was tach or speedo cable loose. They seem fine though. Maybe they just need lubrication? Hoping someone has heard this... and that it's minor...

Well if you think its either tach or speedo related, just undo them at the source one at a time and see what the results are. Then if it goes away you can reconnect the offending cable at the source and undo it at the guage and try again. If it still ticks while disconnected from the gauge its probably the cable. If it only tick while connected to the gauge then thats probably the source.

Do you have a fuel pump on the firewall?

Matthew.

Maybe you have one of those VERY rare instruments - a clock that actually works! <grin>
LD Palmer

This is an odd thought but it might apply. Make sure the glass is tight in the instruments. I had this happen to me a while back and it took me a year to track it down. Same symptoms.

Mark, I think you are on the right track. I was under the dash examining everything and noticed that the frame holding the speedo was loose... it may be the culprit as as the inner cable rotated it could have caused the whole speedo to vibrate in sync. I tightened it up and will report tomorrow if the noise is still there. I ruled out the tach as a possibility when I realized it didn't make the noise when it wasn't moving... only the speedo could do that, the tach would make noise so long as the engine was turning whether the car was stationary or not...

HA! The first time I ran the TD off the truck and idling in the drive I heard an intermittent tick tick... tick.... tick tick. What the heck is......

Danged fuel pump. LOL

....

MAndrus, I remember being surprised the first time I heard the fuel pump clicking too :) I'm used to that!
Geoffrey M Baker

OK, the problem is solved. Just a loose speedo bracket and a loose cable. The ticking is gone this morning :)
