MG TD TF 1500 - Tool roll, fabricating a proper

I was at the GOF 95 in Middlebury and got to talking about tool rolls. I have an early 1951 TD and the tool roll I have is a modern reproduction. It is not proper. I understand the original tool roll was burlap and impregnated with some sort of tar. There was a lady at the GOF who had a tool roll that looked like it was original. The tar and burlap were cumbling as she unrolled it. I remember reading an article a few years ago on making a tool roll that is like the original. I cannot remember where I read it and I have looked in the BBS Archives and cannot find anything. Does anyone remember this article or know of other instructions. I would like to make one.
Thanks in advance for your response.

BTW, it was great seeing you at the GOF

Here is my original TF roll.

I have to agree that Matthew's is the most original tool-kit I have seen, and is in lovely shape. My burlap self-destructed many years ago and now my tools are scattered all over my garage.

I didn't see however, the valve (tube) remover. Its so small, and easily misplaced.

Comparing Matthew's & Chris's tool rolls there are a couple of noticeable differences. The sloping/non sloping top & the number of pouches, 7 or 9 across the bottom. I'm inclined to follow Chris's suggestion & make my own using the burlap/spray can method he outlined on his site but am leaning towards the detail shown in Matthew's pic. See link & pic above. Anybody know what is correct for an early 1951 TD? Cheers

Milton,
I wish you luck in fabricating a tool roll,,, but more important, I think the title of your thread is a huge step foward in the effort to make threads easily found in the archives !!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You!

Gentlemen:
Thank you all for your responses.
David: Thank you for the link. That is what I remembered. It was great seeing you at the GOF. Thank you for all your hard work. It was a great event, even the weather was perfect.
Peter: Your comments reflected my own thoughts. The number of pouches seems to vary and the slope of the top seems to vary. The late TD tool roll and the TF tool roll in Chris' website both have 9 pouches but the tools are in a different order and have different slopes. If anyone can sort out these differences, it would be very helpful. Matthew's TF tool roll is an original so I will follow the design of his roll using Chris' materials and method of construction. However, it would be helpful to see an original early TD tool roll.
Steve: I agree with you about the title to threads ("headers"). They should be written so as to be searchable. That is the point of an archive. I try to draft my headers with that in mind. Wish there was someway to make this point to everyone because some of the headers that have been used do not identify the topic of the thread.
Kind Regards,
Milton
