MG TD TF 1500 - top radiator hose

Changed the top radiator hose for the long hot trip this weekend. It had been on there longer then I can remember and is showing cracks! this is a chore! I removed the bonnet, undid the radiator stays and the headlamp brackets. Then I could pull the radiator forward to get the stubby hose in there. The wall of the hose itself is quite thick and made it difficult to get the clamp rings on. If those screws were 1/4" longer it would have been easier!
We are driving in numbers but didn't want that hose to give out!
Cheers.

Geof,
The old hose can be cut off,,, soak the new hose in HOT water to make it a bit more plyable,,, I use white lith. grease to make it slide on easier,(and come off easier when it has to),,it can be done without pulling the rad foward,or removing the bonnet,, Modern screw hose clamps work better, and are less expensive,,,,
Others have said that the white lith grease isn't good for the hose, but I haven't seen any problems,,

I keep some KY Jelly in the garage for these kinds of chores. It is water soluble and is greasy enough to help slip the hose in place. Like Steve, I don't generally have to move the radiator.

GEOFF AND OTHERS. I use WASHING UP liquid
inside the rubber hose. slips on easily.

Next time, just pop the thermostat housing off to remove that hose.

be selective about what you use for a lube on the rubber hoses. petroleum based lubricating products degrade natural rubber. regards, tom

Great ideas, guys. I like the one removing the thermostat housing. Gives one a chance to clean and test it also.
I should have asked this question before I did the work! It might be a long time before I do it again.
Thanks.
