MG TD TF 1500 - TSO CD-ROM: Content related comments

In this thread please post problems or questions related to the content of the TSO CD-ROM.

For example, there are no items listed under "Electrical Equipment." I have to believe there should be some. Selecting "Special Tools," then "USEFUL SNAP-ON TOOLS" gives a listing of the original NEMGTR members, not tools.

Where we aren't able to help each other resolve problems I'll contact Hank Rippert and see what assistance we can get from the company that produced the CD-ROM.

Thanks.

I have the MAC version, works OK under Reader 5.0, but deletes the MAC OS header line so you can't quit or do anything in the header menus.

I have found one bad file, under TF air filters, gives an error message about this file is bad.

I am trying to download 5.05 and 5.1 to see if this corrects problems.

It looks like there are way too few Tech Articles Indexed. I can't find Some of the early Chip Olds ones, for example about the "Mad Metric" nuts and bolts on Morris engines.

I will post this on both.

It appears that the search engine doesn't actually search each issue. It only searches the topics listed in the search engines windows.

I found the Snap-On Tools, right click on the listing of original NEMGTR members and go to the previous page do this twice and you will find the list.

Roger,

Much about our hobby is realizing that nothing is as simple as it appears. Why should the CD-ROM be any different?

One has to wonder if the non-appearance of entries under the heading "Electrical Equipment" isn't just the ghost of Lucas at work.

I'm waiting to hear from Hank Rippert and eventually, I hope, the CD-ROM production company. I'll inquire about the possibility of an updated edition which corrects the errors and runs under the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I'll post information as soon as I have it.

What is the significance of the "post-it-notes" in pink that say "NO SCAN" but were in fact scanned?

I had trouble getting the PDF file to come on the MS version. It only works with Adobe 5.0 and not later versions. Sent a note to the company developing the CD. No response. Also difficult to read the old copies of the TSO from the sixties.

FWIW they were also hard to read back in the 60s, the affordable choices for printing a club newsletter in those days were pretty much limited to a mimeograph. The image quality on the CD is probably just as good as actually having a 40 year old copy in your hands.

Just my $0.02

for the hard to read copies. Click on the expand buttons in the toolbar, at 73% it's hard to read, expand to 100%, and you can read them easily. It's a problem ith type size and screen resolution.

Look at July 1980 for an index to Technical articles from 1965 to 1980. This is what I hoped the CD's index would be like...all articles. I created a searchable pdf index for these, at least it shows what issues kewords were in (but only up to 1980)

Does anyone know if the TSO had a later Tech index, if so in what issue.

I have developed a search utility that bolts onto the TSO CD-ROM implmentation. It is a single bundled ZIP file and installation is straightforward. I'm working with a couple of people to identify a website from which the search utility can be downloaded, as it is too large to e-mail. The search utility has been tested by a couple of people and appears to be working properly. Using the search utility you can search the entire library of The Sacred Octagon with a single request. Matches are found in approximately 10 seconds or less.

I will post in the TD-TF Bulletin Board as soon as the search utility is available for download. I expect this will be before a week is out.

Larry,

What about us Mac users?? Who can develop one for us??

Don Harmer
Don Harmer

Don,

The search utility is built on Adobe funcionality. I know little about Mac's. It might work as is on the Mac. Certainly there is no harm in trying it. You will need an unzip utility to unpack the zip file.

I would be interested to know if the search utility works on the Mac.

Wouldn't it all be easier to use html and then just view in a browser?
gordon lawson TD 27667

HTML.....
The TSO issues were all scanned as PDF files. I used features in the full version of Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Acrobat Reader) to construct an Adobe keyword database. To use the search engine you simply run Adobe Reader and select the search option built into Adobe Reader. Search then links to the database I constructed and, finally, to the specific PDF files containing the keywords. Everything is contained within the Adobe environment, which is the basis for me suggesting the search utility may work on a Mac, too.

Hey, what does this have to do with MG's?

Larry

Larry,
I have tried it on my MAC, using Reader & Acrobat 5.05
After labeling the folder on Hard Disk TSO1965-2004 and unstufing the TSO.zip I can read everything OK, and install the TSOSearch index ok, a QUERY gets me a strange list of results with a lot of blanks.
The entries like 200304 tell me that the file is missing, etc. error as if it cant't find the right folder or sees no entry in the index.
Would love to correct this.

Where is the rest of index.pdf, the entries only go to DEC.92. You must have 1993 onward Tech article list. Can I get a copy.

Don Harmer
Don Harmer

Don,

If your typing is correct the name of the root folder is not. You say your root folder is "TSO1965-2004". It should be "TSO1964-2004". Are the entire contents of the TSO CD-ROM also copied into this folder, preserving the hierarchy as found on the CD-ROM? Make sure to doublecheck my directions and be sure they were followed exactly.

As part of the search package I included and indexed a file named Index.pdf (in the root folder). It is the latest known index (to me) of The Sacred Octagon. If there is a newer index, I would be glad to include it.

Please let me know how you make out.

Larry
Larry Shoer

Thanks to Larry for creating the index.
Unfortunately I have not been able to get it to work correctly in Acrobat 5.1.
Following the directions (v1.2, steps 1-4) I was able to add the index TSOSearch.pdx.
Unfortunately when I do the query (e.g. "DOOR") I get "Search Results" indicating 200 of 243 documents but most just show a circle at the left and no other info. If I choose VIEW I get "The document may have been created since the index was last built, highlights will not be displayed."
If I select "OK" it just brings me to the first page of an issue.
Am I doing something wrong?

Mark,

You're almost there. After you open the PDF file (which corresponds to one issue of TSO), press function keys F8 and F9. From there you can push the PDF control buttons to move from page to page. If you selected to highlight the text, as you move through the opened PDF file you will see where "door" is highlighted.

Alternatively, select "Edit", then "Find" and enter "DOOR" to go to the next occurence of the word in that issue.

The Results section that shows a circle at the left with nothing else is because the CD-ROM production company did not fill in the field which would be displayed to the right of the circle (except in a few cases). I think I figured a workaround to this that will display the volume, number, and date of the specific TSO issue to the right of the circle. The workaround will be somewhat tedious for me to implement and require a new release of TSO Search. I'll announce when this is available, but it will be a little while before I have time to do it.

Good luck.

Thanks to Larry for setting up the TSO search function, it works great. And thanks to Bud Krueger for placing the ZIP file on his web site.

Try it out.

This is also what I get on my Mac Version, even when I recatalog the whole thing.

For a Mac, using Stuffit: unzip, after putting TSOSearch.zip in disk TSO1964-2004 copy. Then take TSO Search and TSOSearch.pdx out of TSOSearch Folder created by Stuffit Expand.

However, I get the same results as Mark Shermand above.
Don Harmer

For the situation that Mark mentions above:

Highlight one of the circles which represent one of the issues (no names yet as Larry indicated). When you hit the "view" button you will get the message that you mention ("This document may not have ..........."). Now hit the "Highlight Anyway" button and you get the correct page with the highlighted word. In the test case it was "door". Do as Larry mentions and use F9 and F8 to bring up the Acrobat menu for additonal assistance.
