MG TD TF 1500 - TTall slotted hex head 1/4' Whitworth bolts
This set screw is used on the Volks air cleaner for the mgtf 1500. I have the bar stock to make some but need the dimensions for the bolt head. Seems you can't purchase them and they make removing the front air cleaner less of a challenge... bob |

Bob, Email me at dirtydish AT comcast DOT net and I can get some measurements. |

Here we go. Its a snug fit in a 3/16th Whit or 1/4 BS spanner. Top scale is In and bottom scale is mm. Matthew. |

Bob - Here are photos and dimentions of one of my two "Tall-Head" bolts for the Volks air cleaners on my TF-1500. I did not measure both bolts and compute the average. The heads are releaved around the top edge at the point of each flat. Color is similar to blued steel, or may be just old oil stained zinc or cad(?) They are not as brown as photo. "TALL-HEAD BOLTS" - TF Volks Air Cleaner DIMENTIONS > Head Height: 0.4345 in 11.04 mm > Head Width Flat-to-Flat: 0.518 in 13.16 mm > Head Slot Depth: 0.121 in 3.07 mm > Head Slot Width: 0.078 in 1.98 mm > Bolt (posted by David DuBois): 5/16 - 22 BSF > Shaft Diam @ unthreaded shank): 0.310 in 7.87 mm > Shaft Total Length - threaded + unthreaded: 0.816 in 20.73 mm > Shaft Unthreaded Length: 0.2215 in 5.63 mm Lonnie TF7211 |

My TF1500 is missing these two special bolts as well. But I am trying to understand how this special bolt aides in the removal of the filter cover. Could someone explain the positioning and concept. Apologies in advance, DLD |

thanks all, I have to hobby machinists that I will try to have some made. If successful I will offer some to everyone. From what I understand you only need one and it is used on the front of the forward air cleaner... Since I was only able to get SS for the bar stock, these will be in SS but have the proper WW head.. thanks for all the responses should have more than enough info for the machinist. bob |

DLD - The float bowl and throttle body prevent me from fitting a wrench over the front bolt to the air cleaner on the front carb. I can position a flat blade screwdriver over the edge of the float bowl lid to reach the slotted head of the "special bolt." I use a 6-1/2" screwdriver with a 3" shaft. I must use locking tweezers or forcepts to grab the bolt and pull it free. The whole process is relatively fast and easy. I use a wrench on the "special bolt" on the rear carb, so I guess that bolt is a back-up for the front bolt, in case it is lost. What do you use to remove the front bolt on the front air cleaner? Lonnie - thanks for that clarification - very helpful. Bob - it seems you should figure on two special bolts per vehicle - rather than just the one as mentioned above. Thanks so much |

Here is an archived BBS thread about substitute "Tall-Head" bolts. http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&archiveyear=8_2013.dat&access=&subject=8&subjectar=8&source=T&thread=2012071614481122336 I'm still learning about British threads, Whitworth, metric, etc., so this may be a stupid idea ... In addition to 5/16 BSF allen socket-head-cap-screws (SHCS) from British Tools and Fasteners that were mentioned in the archived thread, would an M8-1.25 X 20mm Socket Head Cap Screw fit Volks air cleaners? Or could the threads be cut/modified to fit? Use a straight or bent allen wrench to remove the bolt. Fastenal link is too long so it doesn't work. Search Fastenal site for Products > Fasteners > Sockets > Socket Cap Screws http://www.fastenal.com/web/home Lonnie TF7211 |

Hello, Thread reactivated I have been trying to source the long slotted bolts for the TF air cleaners for some time but with no luck. Anyone out there who has a pair lying around, or has machined some for sale? If s please get in touch, regards, Jan |

Funny, I don't have the originals and I have no problem taking the units off or putting them back on. I just bought the repos from Moss and used them. They have the standard hex head with no slot. Not being exposed, who's to know! PJ |
