MG TD TF 1500 - Turn signals
None of my front or rear lights will flash ? The indicator switch works and the flasher switch clicks. The brake Lights work and the parking lights work?? |

Hi Bill, Is this a new installation or something happened to a previously working one? Is the flasher a standard one that changes speed when a bulb fails or an electronic one that dies not care? Rgds Mike |

Hi Bill,
I'm having the same issue Try a 1k ohm resister between ground and the wire going to the brake light flasher circuit. (14 and 15 output terminal from the relay box.) On My TD the original system was Lucas mechanical flasher on incandescent bulbs. I changed to Abingdon Spares LED a year or so ago. All stopped working a few days back. The Abingdon Spares flasher worked fine - until I started the engine. Then all the flashers would blink very rapidly when selected. ( like EMI interference) I ended up using a LiteZupp flasher unit LFM3PG (Positive ground $18) which worked out of the box. They have advised me to put a 1k ohm resister across the brake light circuit to help the flasher see the LED load. Because I am not using their led bulbs. Still working on it. They sent me a new flasher unit to try and two 1 k ohm resisters. (Which you can also get them form WalMart) Very good product support in my book. I will let you know how it works out. Rod Test each bulb with a 12v source to be sure all are working first. My dash bulb is the original incandescent 2 watt bulb though. but it still worked, |

Of Course, Bill, neglects to tell us whether he is using incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs, or my purpose built LED light boards. In either LED case, it is common for the turn signals not to flash after converting to LEDs. This is because the old style electro-mechanical flasher doesn't see enough current draw to trigger the flasher. Although this can be overcome by the addition of a resistor (I usually recommend against this), but if you must, use a 6 ohm 25 watt resistor between the turn signal circuit and ground. But that eliminates one of the two reasons for going to LEDs in the first place - lower current draw.
If one has gone to LEDs all around, not just in the rear, the proper answer is converting the flasher to an all electronic flasher. It should be the FULLY electronic flasher that normally comes in a square - not round - can. I personally have had good luck with the Tridon EF-13 or CF-13, but NOT the ones made in Taiwan. Bill,
You did not say who you got the LED's from or if you had just installed them or if it had been previously working. My LED flashers stopped working after a year and a half and like you, I could hear the relay unit click when the indicator s/w was set to left or right. I talked with LiteZupp Mike and he sent me a new electronic flasher unit which would only work once after the ignition was turned on. He also sent me 2 x 1k ohm restores to help it see the load. It turned out that the new flasher unit had a fault and Mike made a new one and I received it today. Not only did it work right out of the box but he increased the flasher frequency to 50 50 and it is absolutely perfect now. Flashers are back in working condition and better than before Cannot say enough good about the service I received from Mike Sabelhaus of LiteZupp. Totally owned the problem and fixed it. From what you have said in your initial note I would certainly look at replacing the electronic flasher unit. I took my relay unit apart and there was nothing inside it that looked bad. Two solenoids and some contacts. If you hear it clicking on selection, you can ohm out the connections on the outside to see if you have continuity across the contacts inside. The 1k ohm resistors are only if your electronic flasher unit does not see enough load to flash. Mine now works without them. |
