MG TD TF 1500 - Under dash panel
I was just made aware that my TF came from the factory with a cardboard? panel under the dash to hide the wires, etc. If anyone has theirs off and can give me particulars as to its dimensions, thickness, materials and covering, or colour, I sure would appreciate same. |

Gene A repro moulded under dash panel is not expensive and I think it would be difficult to fabricate in the correct shape. Mine cost £16 from Moss UK. John |

Gene - I have a new under dash shield for a TF that is for sale. If you will send me your e-mail address, I'll send you a list of all the parts that I have for sale. I can also send you a picture of the shield if you would like. Cheers - Dave |

Gene, I got one from Abingdon Spares a few years ago for around $20Us. Moss also had them for the same price. Dave |

The first time you need to work under the dash, you'll wish you had never seen the d*** thing. I'll bet that more than 50% of the cars, do not have one installed. Bob Wrenn |

Yes it is original but I have yet to see a car that has one. I considered it when I restored my TD, but it seems like there is always something to do up under the dash and the darn thing would prevent me from getting at anything. If you like a buttoned up look and are absolutely sure you will not need to back up inside the dash etc.. by all means put it in place. Peersonally I can see no need for it all. Cheers, Rob |

Gentlemen, as usual you amaze me with your swift responses and input. Since I've not had the car on the road yet, and I'm sure there are issues to rectify when it does, I'm best to save putting one in until I've put a least a season's driving on it. Thanks to all! |

Gene I use only four of the eight screws securing the under dash panel to the holding frame. Two at the top next to the fascia and two half way down. If I have to get at the wiring it only takes a couple of minutes to remove or replace the panel and it does mean the ancient wiring is protected from prying little hands or old clumsy feet! John |

Gene, I wanted my TF to be as original as I could make it (except for the chrome hinges and tank straps, which I can't do anything about). So I re-fitted the under dash panel. I got mine from Abingdon Spares and it fits just fine. It has some compound bends and it would be difficult to duplicate on your own. If you need the screws, they have them, too. To me, the car was intended to have an under dash panel, and it really adds a finishing touch. Just as it was intended to have lever shocks, a hood that never quite seems to fit under the tonneau, a master cylinder accessed through a hole in the wooden floor, and all of the other quirky stuff that we put up with. So go for it and just be prepared for a little frustration when you need to lube a cable or replace a bulb. Greg TF 6846 XPEG 797, NEMGTR #12312 TC 6669 XPAG 7170, NEMGTR #3777 |
