MG TD TF 1500 - Unidentified rubber part
so, in my baggie of gas tank rubber parts are two pieces of rubber that measure 1 X 2.25 X 1/4 inch (with a small hole probably for a split rivet). Another example of why I should have taken more pics. Please, where do they go? Dave 52 TD |

Dave, Schach shows a gas tank pad secured by a split rivet on page 142 of his restoration book. They cushion the bottom of the tank which has a support channel. Each pad is located on the main chassis rail just forward of the leaf spring shackle, just above the angle bracket on the side of the chassis rail. good luck, dave |

Dave: The other Dave is correct. Cheers, Jim |

Unfortinately, no. I have those pads (they are about 3" X 4" and thick) and sit on the frame. The ones I am talking about are 1" X 2 1/4" by 1/4" thick. They were in the pile of rubber that I had marked "Gas Tank". The only ones I find for the tank are the long ones that the tank leans on against the back and the referenced ones that are on the frame rail. Can't figure out where on the car the small ones came from. Call me confused. Dave 52TD |

The only other pieces of rubber near this size in the TD rubber kit are the two pieces listed for the "buffer set, top bow" item #28- although the dimensions are not listed. I don't remember these on disassembly, and I am not quite to this point on reassembly. Could these be what you have? Dallas |

Take a look a Budd's T-talk site. Looks like the bottom of the tank has the rubber doubled up. Maybe on yours also? LaVerne |

Dave, send an image to me and I'll put it on Ttalk for all to see. Bud |

This sounds like the piece of rubber goes on the outside of top frame to prevent the side curtain from rubbing on the frame. Looked at mine and it fits the size and has a spit pen sort of thing to hold to the top frame Ellis |
Ellis Carlton |
Sorry, where?? Dave |
mgaviator |
There is a hole on the top frame near the top which holds this piece of rubber which keeps the side curtain from rubbing on the top frame. ellis |
Ellis Carlton |
Ellis' Most of those rubbers that are attached to the outer side of the hood frames are about 1/2" wide and a little over 1" long with two holes for small screws. These holes are on each end. The rubber pieces are approximately 3/16" thick with thinner ends where the screws go through. The slimmer ends keep the screw heads from rubbing on the side curtain frame. Sandy |
Sandy Sanders |
Sandy, hey, I stand corrected. I was going half cocked without looking. Went and looked and you are exactly correct. Ellis |
Ellis Carlton |
Well, it sounds like you guys know where they go, but I unfortunately still do not, sorry.... Do I understand that they are on the frame, above the rear axle and intended to keep the side curtain box from rubbing? And when you say frame, do you mean the main vehicle frame? Thanks for the help. Dave 52 TD |

Group - I think these were used to mount the fuel pump to the bracket. sara |
sara D |
Dave R, The rubbers Ellis and Sandy are talking about go on the 'Hood frame' or convertible top frame. They peek out just below the top edging on the second (from the rear) verticle bow frame. warmly, dave B |
Dave Braun |
Sara D is totally correct. Two of these rubbers are used to mount the fuel pump bracket to the firewall.. I suffered a senior moment in not recognising them. remember memory loss is the second sign of old age Sandy NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU ELLIS/ |

See http://www.ttalk.info/picture_this.htm and scan down for Dave's parts. |

They don't look like TD fuel pump mount rubbers that I have seen. The ones I have are slightly rounded at the corner, and have bolt holes in them. According to the note with the picture, these were on the car when disassembled. I had my definitely original fuel tank rubbers in hand yesterday- these are definitely not as original, so perhaps something someone substituted . Or off another car type? George |

DaveR, A guess that the PO made these to adjust the height of the top of the tank, ie use them as extra pads between the bottom of the tank and the frame? Probably made them from a spare pad that sits between the back of the tank and the tub, hence one part has the split rivet hole one does not? Good luck Graham (Honorary Dave) TD/C 7822 |
G.D. Smith |
Graham, you could be right. A pic is on Ttalk at http://www.ttalk.info/picture_this.htm Dave |

Moss lists the 2 pads for mounting the fuel pump as PN 281-148 at just over $2.00. Lou |

How about the rubber pads that fit inside the rear axle check straps? |
George Butz |
I think they were a PO fix at fitting the gas tank. I wish I know what he did, because I have spent the last hours trying to get the #X&*^%$# thing to go on without metal-to-metal contact. If anyone has experience with this let me know. Thanks Dave 52TD |
