MG TD TF 1500 - Update over heating

Hello folks
Well this is a update to my question about a friends car.
He add the thermostat changed and water pump at the same time. So that rules that out.
I have an extra temp gauge from my midget.
Would we get a good reading from this gauge?
It's not the same model car but it is a smith gauge.
This is to see if his temp gauge is reading wrong.
Thanks for the help

An easy calibration method is a pan of boiling water. It is always 212F - or very close when boiling. It will never get any hotter than that. If it's practical you can use it to check the gage and thermostat to get a pretty good idea of how well they are working. Also the volt-amp meter that I got at Sears last year has a thermal couple plug which can be real helpful.

I used my wife's candy thermometer to check my temp indicator. I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of my gauge.

How do you use the candy thermometer?
Thanks

Warm up the engine, let it run, remove the radiator cap and insert the thermometer.

How do you go about this with out having the fluid blow out?
Use a towel?
Thanks

It's an unpressurised system - water won't go anywhere.

Jason,
Be careful anyway. Only the TC and TD were non pressurized. TF has a pressurized system. You didn't mention what model your friend had.
