MG TD TF 1500 - V-notch on steering column?
What is the purpose of the "V" notch on the end of my TF inner steering column? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

I believe it it to ensure the keyway is aligned properly so the steering wheel is in the proper position/ alignment. Notch up is how my car was when I needed to disconnect the steering column to install the dash when doing upholstery. Frank TF1414 |

This is a "left over" from the design of the MG Y-Type - the first MG built with rack & pinion steering.
The Y's had a slip ring on the outside of the steering shaft to transfer wiring to the rotating portion of the column. A wiring loom then passed down the outside of the steering shaft & used that V-notch to feed inside the shaft and up to the controls (horn & trafficators) on the steering wheel centre. The attached photo shows the small loon in the half round conduit clamped to the shaft. I hope this answers your question. Yours in Y-Types Tony |
