MG TD TF 1500 - Valve Cover Breather

My TD has K&N pancake air filters with nowhere for a pipe from the valve cover breather port to go. Looking at the Moss exploded view it appears that originally the VC breather tube just went into the side of the oil bath filter canister so that the fumes could be sucked into the engine and burned. From other pictures it looks like the TF VC breather tube just punches into the back of one of the dry filter housings.

The little K&N filter I have mounted on the VC breather port on my TD looks kinda stupid (see pic) and I'm wondering it there is any reason not to poke a hole in the back of one or both of the air filters and run the VC breather tube into the air filter just like on a TF.

Thanks.

TF breather does indeed go to the front air cleaner.
The other "difference" you will note is that TD VC has the vent "on top" while the TF comes out "the side".
Might make for some strange "plumbing" ...but doable.

I run an after market VC on my TF and added this vent as it had none. The tricky part was coming up with a "baffle" so it didn't pour oil into the front AC!

Carefully inspect the baffle inside the stock valve cover to make sure you don't have that problem!
Although I am familure with the baffle on stock TF VC ...I am unsure what (if any) is on the stock TD VC.

Be happy to post some pics of the inside of TF VC if that would help let me know.

David:

Thanks. I'll pull the VC and take a look for a baffle. If it's there it should be rather simple to stick a 90 degree tube (Moss 280-180 or equivalent) on the outlet and run a tube to the back of the front AC. I'll need to fabricate some kind of inlet tube into the back plate of the AC. I'm thinking of the kind of threaded tube used for lamps and light fixtures with lock nots on both sides of the plate. If I'm successful I'll post a pic.

There is as restrictor about 10mm in the pipe linking the valve cover to the air cleaner oil bath. I guess it cuts the air flow by 65% to avoid sucking in oil mist, and looks liike a small washer.

I love that breather. First thing I noticed. Embrace it :-)

Jud,
Was out in the garage so maybe this will help.
Baffle on the TF valve cover.

Jud send me a email , in return I'll send you pic's how I made the inlet on the back of my air filter.
Sorry gent's I have no way to re-size picture's here.

When fabricating your air cleaner breather pipe, don't forget about the Shop Manual note about a 9/32" restrictor in it. As I remember, the factory intitially released a Service Bulletin which was later incorporated into the Manual. My guess is that the vacuum created in the air breather was strong enough to suck the oil vapors from the VC into the engine thus producing excessive oil consumption.

Reading about the "restrictor" in TD air cleaner set up triggered some brain cells. (Some of them still functional)
On the TF this is also the case ...it is "cast" into the breather pipe on the air cleaner. Considerably smaller inside diameter hole when compared to the size of hose used! Not a "separate piece" on the TF ...but same principle.

Gosh, thanks guys. Chris almost has me convinced to stay with the purple Xmas tree but I think I'll try the tube to the carb AC with a restrictor. I'm not throwing away the purple Xmas tree though.

Just for symetry I was thinking about branching the tube so there would be one branch to each carb AC but on looking at the Service Bulletin that might leave me completely oilless. I'll stay with the TF one tube to # 1 Carb AC system.

Jud , you have mail,

I made up a tube from my aftermarket TF VC to the stub on the front Vokes of Guildford (love that name!) air cleaner. Less engine sweating than with the atmospheric breather I had that resembled your purple Xmas tree. Probably creates a slight crankcase vacuum - if your piston rings seal well...

Gerard, thanks for the pictorial. I hope I can do as good as you did.
