MG TD TF 1500 - valve cover closed of !!!

Hi Gent's I like to hear your opinion on this.
My TD has a nice after market Moss valve cover ( on the car when I bought it )
But it is completely closed at the protruding cover breather some-one put a piece of plastic in there.

I personally don't like the idea having it closed and rely only at the tappet inspection cover outlet.

The carbs have those nice ( new ) H&S air cleaners and it looks good.

To make some piping / or hose from the valve cover to the two air-cleaners is no problem for me. ( yes with a restriction build in ).

What are your thoughts ?????

Thanks for your time ,

Gerard

Gerald,
If you mean "Stelling & Hellings" air filters you might want to take a look at the thread I have going right now on here:
TF1500 engine alignment / Volks air cleaners

Although the "Volks" would be NA to the TD there has been considerable talk in the archives about the S&H "chocking" the preformance on our cars.

I am getting ready to try a little "different" approach for the TF. You may have better luck finding an element to fit yours and making a breather tube to them for the TD.

Depends if your breather comes out the "side" or the "top" as to how much intrest it may be.

TD orginaly came out the top for the "oil bath" type air cleaners fitted to them. Later TD2/Mark II and TF came out the side and ran to the front air cleaner, Volks for the TF. I am unsure if the Mark II used these or not?

Cheers,
David

Dave and all - I think you will find that Mark II cars never came from the factory with Vokes filters; the later Mark II cars used a larger air intake looking like the regular one, but with the support boss moved to fit. Throughout it's production the Mark II valve cover was a standard TD cover, and did not use the TF horizontal breather. Neither did later TD2 cars, which were also of the vertical variety.

Thanks Tom...kind of figured you would know that one!
Wasn't sure when the went to the larger carbs if it got "moved" to the side. Now I know.

Uh sorry Guy's but's going a bit of topic I think.( sorry for the remark ) yes I know how the airfilters looked like on the TD . Have them on hand . But If you calculate airfriction versus tube lenght and original airfilter free opening and so on I think that TWO airfilters give better breating. And two airfilters cannot influence each other as it can happen in the original set up.
Now the question again Please see my first post.

Thanks.

My feeling would be "go for it" ...maybe for a slightly "different reason" in your case than I am pursuing the same on the TF ...but same "basic concept".

Air filters
Crappy "Stellings & Hellings" filters for HS4 SU. May not be real S&H, but the design is so bad as to make this irrelevant.
These are the chrome ones with perforated chrome sleeves on both sides of the foam element.
Airflow area available:
84 holes @ .190dia. = 84 x .095sq x 3.14 = 2.38 in sq per filter.
That is maximum at the inner sleeve, reduced by alignment of the similar outer sleeve and foam.

Following is comparison to an OE MGB filter. You will not be able to match it on a T, but you certainly can and should improve on the ersatz S&H garbage

Airflow area of OE paper, gross:
3 3/4 D X 2 deep x .8 estimated screen coefficient = 33 in sq per filter.
Actual element is unfolded size = .550pleat width x 2sides per pleat x 3depth x 76 pleats = 250.8 in sq.
Note that ONE pleat has nearly 50% more filtering area = 3.3 in sq. than the entire S&H filter!
The S&H has about 7% of the gross and 1% of the element area available in the OE unit.
This means that not only is it very restrictive, but also that air velocity in the media is so high as to make any useful filtration impossible. I consistently find that cars with these things have filthy carbs, to the point where they no longer function correctly, after only a few thousand miles use.

S&H also has an bad backplate, further restricting air flow, and it is so flimsy as to not retain the gasket, which shrinks into the intake, making it worse still. The car I am working on has about a 1 1/4 hole through the shrunken gasket, which is the correct 1 1/2 original type.

FRM, very good point here and thanks, I have talked to K&N today they told me that they can make any filter I want. They are aware that the S&H foam filter is crap and I can only agree. They have the dimensions for the S&H filter on hand and promised me a quote. If its gonna be to expensive ,I buy one of their filters and make it fit in to the S&H housing with some alterations. I also agree with you that the gaskets supplied shrink ( have a example here on my bench ) but I am able to manufacturer gaskets by hand from a material named " clingerith " they will not shrink in any case.Re S&H back plate: the example's I have here are probally made from better material and are sturdy
