MG TD TF 1500 - walnut Wheel
I just finished making a Walnut steering wheel for my td. Thanks to the nice pictures and info from G Blanco that was posted. I used some old planks of Peruvian walnut that I've had for 10 years and it turned out pretty nice. I'll share my info with anyone interested in doing a wheel. I bought a used wheel on ebay to use while I was working on the project so I wasn't down for the month it took me to play with the walnut! Thanks Chuck |

Looks pretty nice to me. I like the larger diameter of the rim. Sometimes my hands cramp up using the standard diameter rims. Cheers, Bob |

Very nice...and I agree with Bob; the thicker rim would be very comfortable. |

Chuck I was just thinking of making a wooden wheel out of my original one. Please pass on any info you have. Cheers Mike R mmrenton@gmail.com |

Chuck, I am having a friend make one for me who loves woodwork but it will be his first steering wheel so the more info I give him the better. Please send me what you have. Rob |

Chuck, if you're willing to send the info to me I'd be happy to post it on my website (http://www.ttalk.info/) for folks to see. Bud Krueger |

Chuck, What did you do to dress up the metal bits that the rods attach to on the rim? My father is making a walnut wheel for me and we haven't figured out what to do with those. |

I all the old plastic and filled the gaps with jb weld. then I bondoed and sanded, spot puttied and sanded , primered and sanded then painted those tabs. I tried to make the wheel a bit smaller than 16 inches to hide more of the tab but I made the octagon a little too big. Te finished wheel cross section diameter is 1-1/32 inch. Feels good! chuck |

Chuck, you have got the same colours as my car! Or is it Ivory? Your wheels look nicer, though. Are they new? Beautiful. |

I would appreciate receiving info on how you completed this task. It is truly beautiful. frank.grimaldi@earthlink.net |

The walnut wheel was a fun project. Thanks to gblandco for sharing the photos and info at www.gblandco.com/oldwheel/oldwheel.html make sure you make your octagons big enough to work with. I made a plate with a 9" arm on it to swing the router around that big 16" circle. E-mail me at chuckschmit@sbcglobal.net if you have any questions. Merry xmas! Chuck |

...here is a non public page on my website...shows most steps in doing it the way I do... http://gblandco.com/oldwheel/oldwheel.html samples of wheels are at: http://gblandco.com I picked up some aluminum square tubing (architectural) and had it cut down the middle... then cut 1" pieces, ground the edges at a 45 degree angle and polished them...then they slide right over that steel rim clamp...cleans them right up.... |

Gordon, how thick are your pieces? |

I like em fat.

I plane them down to 1/8" .... I use 7 layers ... that gives me a wheel 7/8"x 7/8"....then i round the edges with a 1/2" router round over on all four sides.... then sand.....gives me a bit thicker wheel rim, but not giant..... |
