MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump By-pass Hose Clamp Too Long
Don't know if I goofed, or if I have a wrong part ... I have tightened the hose clamps on the water pump by-pass hose on my TF-1500 as far as they will go, but they are still not tight to the connecting pipe. I can easily move the hose. What can I do to get them tight and stop leaking? I bought new hoses and a set of eight wire hose clamps from Moss (#326-398). Six of the eight clamps are the same size. The two that connect the upper radiator hose are larger. The MG Service Parts List (AKD 804) lists a separate part number for the two clamps for the by-pass hose. Probably because the by-pass pipe is smaller diameter than the other two openings on the connecting pipe. > Should two of the clamps in the Moss set be smaller diameter for the by-pass hose? > Any suggestion on how to adapt my clamps or the connecting pipe to stop the leak? > Any other source for smaller wire clamps for the by-pass hose? This is the hose that I am talking about (photo of TF9052) http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtf/Pictures/TF9052/TF9052_069.jpg Thanks for your help, Lonnie TF7211 |

Can't you just use standard screw type hose clamps? I think that's what's on my TD's bypass hose, and you can get them from any hardware store.... |

A short-term fix could be to pack a strip of inner tube under the clamp to provide the extra pressure. Matthew. |

Lonnie, unless you are going for a concurs restoration, go the local hardware store and by some screw type hose clamps,,, they are easier to work with, tighten around the hose much better, and a heck of a lot less expensive,,, SPW |

I know that I can stop the leaks by using perforated worm gear clamps on the by-pass hose. My MG will never be concours quality, but I'm trying to use period correct parts where possible. I just finished painting the engine and detailing the engine bay. I had my exhaust manifold metalized with aluminum as was originally done by MG. So two gear clamps will stick out like a sore thumb. Still looking for a source for the correct size clamp. Lonnie TF7211 |

The bypass hose is a smaller diameter but the real question is do you two round loops meet when you tighten the screw all the way down? If so then its not tight enough. But if there is still a gap you should be OK. Did you make sure you threaded the open ends through the bottom and not to each side? The screws sit over the long tails. |

I'm with you Lonnie. If you are going to fit a part then why not fit the correct one! I bought a complete set from Sportparts here in Sydney but am yet to fit them. Give Bruce a try. He's in Normanhurst in NSW & you should be able to get his email address from the net. Otherwise you could give Matthew's fix a try. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

On my car, the originals were lost so I wanted wires like factory. I ran into the same problem like you did Lonnie at the branch pipe. What I did is I straightened out the wires and removed the loop. I marked the area where the loop was before straightening. I got some round steel stock laying approx the same diameter of the loop that holds the elongated nut for the screw to tighten to, and wrapped the wire tightly around it to make a new loop for the nut for a snug fit. No leaks. I believe I had to make a new loop for the nut at least a 1/2" closer. Did that make sense? |

Abingdon Spares shows different part numbers for the TC/TD bypass clamps as compared with the TF bypass clamps. Moss isn't specific, just a different set. Call A/S 1-800-225-0251. Bud |

I phoned Moss shortly before closing time. They confirmed that there should be three different sizes of clamps in the hose clamp set. Advised me to phone tomorrow morning and talk to a manager to request two replacement clamps for the by-pass hose. I'll let you know the results. Chris - The ends of the hose clamps meet solidly together when the screw is tightened all the way. They can't be tightened any farther. Thanks for the contact at American Stripping. My exhaust manifold and manifold clamps arrived today and look great. Reid even sent some gloves to wear so that I won't get it dirty when I install it. Peter and Bud - Thanks for the source. I hope that Moss can provide the correct size clamps. Frank - I REALLY hope that I don't need to create new clamps like you did! BTW - your photos of TF9052 were a great resource as I worked on my engine bay including which direction to face the screws on the clamps on each hose. Thanks to all for your suggestions. I called Moss again this morning. They will send two small clamps for the by-pass hose today. Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie I installed these Moss wire clamps and I had a heckuva time getting them tight with a screwdriver. I finally utilized the hex head of the screw and attached a small socked and used a wrench to tighten. That helped me quite a bit. I can't recall if I had three different sized, but I do recall the the job was tough and took quite a bit of time. And I too think that these look better than auto store hose clamps. Love that authentic look under the hood!!! Tom '54 TF |

UPDATE: I received two replacement wire clamps from Moss, part #326-430. They seem to be the same diameter as the six that were in the hose clamp kit (plus two larger ones for the upper radiator hose.) Individual clamps do not show in a standard search on the Moss site. This link shows the individual sizes available: http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=51722&SortOrder=60 #326-475: 7/16" - 9/16" #635-100: 3/4" - 7/8" #635-060: 7/8" - 15/16" #326-410: 1" - 1 1/4" #326-465: 1 1/4" - 1 7/16" #326-430: 1 3/8" - 1 9/16" #326-440: 1 7/16" - 1 5/8" #326-450: 1 11/16" - 1 7/8" #031-724: 1 7/8" - 2" #326-230: 2 1/4" - 2 7/16" #326-460: 2 13/16" - 2 5/8" The tightest position of some of the clamps is only 1/16" - 1/8" different from the next size. So, I'll buy two #326-465 clamps in addition to #326-430 and see which fit better. Lonnie TF7211 |

Let Mike Grant at Moss know which clamps should be applied to which hoses when you figure it out. |

Lonnie, from the Abingdon Spares Catalog - the factory part # for those clamps is 10210. I don't have a copy of the TF Service Parts List to check the number. ( I think I sent it to you). Tell Moss to match A/S Part No. 07-037a. Or call 1-800-225-0251. Bud |

FYI. I ordered the clamps Lonnie is having fit / leaking issues with from AS and had the same problem. I modified them to stop the leak. |

I'm reactivating this thread because I didn't post the final result of my quest for the right size hose clamps on the by-pass hose of my TF-1500 #7211. AND because Don Lawson discusses the same problem with TF hoses and hose clamps on p. 33 of "Technical Topics" in the current issue of TSO, vol. 52, no. 6, December 2014. Moss sent two wire hose clamps #326-430 to replace the TF by-pass hose clamps that were too large. They were the same size as the ones that came in the set #326-398. So I bought a couple of smaller sizes. #326-465 (1-1/4" - 1-7/16") and #326-410 (1" - 1-1/4") >>> SUCCESS ... Part #326-465 is the correct size for the TF by-pass hose. Now the boring details: TF Service Parts List AKD804 lists five different part numbers for clamps on the four cooling system hoses. Moss TF hose clamp set #326-398 that I received only had two sizes. Moss tech rep told me that the Moss kit should have three sizes, so he sent two replacement clips that were also too large. Here are the original MGTF part numbers and what I believe to be the equivalent Moss part numbers. 2 - #X24453, clip by-pass hose - - Moss #326-465 2 - #X19524, clip connecting pipe - - Moss 326-430 2 - #95958, clip top hose - - Moss #? The Parts List has two "alternative" part numbers for the lower radiator hose 2 - #95621, clip bottom hose (supergrip 1-1/2") or #19546 (supergrip 1-5/8") - - Moss #? Possible Moss part numbers for upper and for lower radiator hose clamps: #326-440 (1-7/16" - 1-5/8") #326-450 (1-11/16" - 1-7/8") #031-724 (1-7/8" - 2") Replace the slotted hex head screws on the Moss clamps with slotted round head to be "correct." I didn't. And to make it even more confusing, the by-pass hose does not fit as tightly onto the water outlet as it does to the connecting pipe. I had to massage the hose to keep if from puckering as I tightened the clamp which results in a leak. The outlet looks the same size as the connecting pipe on TF9052.
