MG TD TF 1500 - Watkins Glen Vintage races - an update

TO ALL THOSE GOING TO WATKINS GLEN, SEPT 10 TO 12.

For those that have not yet booked lodgings, rooms are already quite scarce. However, a couple of the rooms I booked in March for the Montreal MG Car Club, are now available as some of our members that had indicated they would go, are now not going.

If you would like a room at the Super 8 Motel in Painted Post, NY about 20 miles south of WG, feel free to call them at [607] 937-5383. Tell them that you have contacted me and that you want one of the rooms reserved under the name of the Montreal MG Car Club, under the reservation numbers 47274 to 47284. Non-smoking rooms are $59.88 per person - 2 in a room, or a supplement of $5 for a single person alone in a room.

A LITTLE MORE INFO ABOUT THE EVENT

The week-end is known as the Zippo Vintage Grand Prix with race car entries running at the 400 level, of which over 100 are MGs, as this week-end, the celebrated marque is MG.

Some major national MG Clubs are holding functions.

The New England MG T Register is holding GOF 77 at the Best Western. Go to (www.NEMGT.org) for more info.

NAMGAR is also holding a GT Event headquartered at the Holiday Inn in Painted Post. For more info, go to http://www.namgar.org/

I couldn’t find anything for the North American MGB Association. In fact, Watkins Glen is not even mentioned on their web-site

If you have never been at the Zippo week-end before, you want to be certain that you get into the town of Watkins Glen before 3:PM, as they virtually close off the town and Friday, or you will have to park a considerable way from the centre of activities. The main feature is the “Re-enactment tour” in which all 400 vintage vehicles do two or three ‘parade’ laps over the old course which includes the narrow main street of Watkins Glen. A real blast if there ever was one!

The full schedule of all vintage racing can be found at http://www.svra.com/2004_watkins/schedule.htm

Finally the MG Races. There are two - both on Sunday, and both are Colliers Cup races. at 11:15 on Sunday morning Collier Cup Race #1 for Pre-war MGs and all T-Series; and at 12:45 PM the second Collier Cup Race #2 for MGAs (incl Twin Cams), MGBs, midgets (I don’t know about MGC’s but there are 2 shown on my list).

I have a lot of info. If anybody needs anything and can’t find it in the above information, contact me and I’ll see what can be done.

When i was at the races in June I inquired about rooms for that weekend in Sept.... most places are only booking 4 day bookings.... at pretty high prices... I passed and thought i would camp... although i'm not sure how smart it would be to drive that far at this point... anyway... those are pretty darned good prices for rooms.........

As a result of the above thread, all rooms are taken.

Now, let's pray for good weather.

Gord:

Good coverage. Just one minor point; the "Re-enactment" is limited to the first 150 race cars that agree to do it, based upon being asked when one registers at the track. At the rate at which MG drivers are signing up, I'm thinking the re-enactment this year will be all MGs!

Gordon Lawson - "although i'm not sure how smart it would be to drive that far at this point..." Since when does smart figure in when driving MGs? I'll have to send you the write up of our trip to GoF West in California in 1976. We were going to camp our way down and left in two MGs (a 53 TD and a 36 PB) with two little children on the afternoon of Friday the 13th in the pouring rain and that was the high point of the trip. We did survive and have taken many more cross country trips in our MGs.

Gordon,
My wife & I camped last year at the State Park @ the Glen...really quite a nice campground. We got everything we needed into the B (didn't take the TD last year), I'm sure if you have a luggage rack, you'll be able to fit enough to camp. Don't need cooking stuff...just drive the 1 mile into town to eat!!

Further, @ 12:30 Thursday the 9th, there will be a memorial moment and ceremony at the Collier stone memorial, (at the point where Sam Collier's car left the roadway in his fatal crash). All MG people in attendace are encouraged to come.
