MG TD TF 1500 - Way off topic, but kind of cool
My chrysler minivan has had a rough idle and miss for years. It reciently got much worse' and I got a check engine light. The code was for a cylender 6 misfire. I took out the plug, and the end was distroyed. I replaced the plug and it was only marginally better. I did a compression check, and cylenders one through five had 160 pounds. 6 had 30 pounds. I did a leak down test and found the leakage was going out the tail pipe. I removed the exhaust manifold and scoped the port with my harbor freight color camera scope (only $50 at Harbor Freight). This is what I found:

About time for a valve job, eh? But at least you know where the spark plug end went. |

Once you have one of those things, you find a hundred uses for it. Very good diagnostic tool. Dan |

Thanks ...been thinking about getting one of those HF scopes...but been Leary due to cheap price. Looks like it does a decent job for the $$. |

I would recommend this HF scope. It is very well made. My only complaint is that it is just a tad too big to fit through the spark plug hole. I have found many uses for it, and it has saved me a great deal of time. Here is a better view of the valve, with the blown spark plug, now that it is all torn apart.

That is an interesting find. Wonder if the plug broke off when it was being installed and the part that broke off did the valve damage. |

D Sander. When you remove the heads check that the valve guides have not moved. My van burned oil and all the guides were slipping and pulled aoff the stem seals. Chrysler would not do anything claiming that 1 QT per thousand miles was okay.I had only 32ooo miles on that PIG. Sandy |

I just used our HF camera on our Plymouth minivan. Some critter ate the wires off the crankshaft sensor. Of course, it is located deep down, in behind on the bellhousing, and it snapped off flush while trying to pry it out. Spent many hours with a mirror and angle die grinder digging it out the same way a dentist excavates a cavity. After installing a new "no name brand" sensor, the V6 became a V4; 2 cylinders had no spark from the distributor. I used the camera to inspect the "tone ring" inside the bellhousing- it looked OK and felt good, but the sensor refused to cooperate at that one section of the ring. I tapped a voltmeter into the wires and could see 4 short voltage dips, another set of 4 dips and then just one long volt drop. I bought a used sensor off ebay in hopes to get a genuine Chrysler part, but the idiots yanked it out by the wire and ripped off 2 out of 3 wires. Another week wasted. Finally got another new sensor, and it solved the problem. This time, I looked up the brand name- Standard Motor Products and discovered they're an OEM supplier, and supply the aftermarket under the name BWD. Have been wondering if that defective sensor was made by Lucas! |

Dave: The cheap version of the camera is $90 at HF and the good one is $199. You got yours a long time ago? |

Chris, The camera scope was on sale in a sale flyer, then I used an additional coupon on top of that. They often have super sales in addition to there already rediuliously low prices. A lot of the stuff HF sells is junk, but amongst the junk are some gems like this camera scope. David |

I have had the camera for a few months. I just went on line and looked, mine looks like the $89 one. Mine came with a nice blow molded case. It was on sale, and I used a coupon too. It is very high quality, especially for what I paid for it. -David |
