MG TD TF 1500 - What engine?

I guess I need some more learnin',,
What engine/manifold is in this car ???

Thats interesting...seems way larger then the stock TD air cleaner manifold....haha....not to mention the carbs on the other side? When he posted 1500 perhaps someone put an MGA engine in?
Those also don't look like TF seat backs...wonder if they must made something up?
Assuming it is a late '52 by the gauges and switches?

And if it's the wrong engine it must also be the wrong transmission...

You probably recognise that the engine is either an MGA or an MGB, but I don't know where the air manifold came from. Perhaps an early Mark II TD? I don't know of any other application that had dual carbs and a larger oil bath air cleaner.
Steven Tobias

Maybe a ZA or ZB which used a 1500 engine and a similar intake manifold.
Barc Cunningham

It looks like a BMC "B" series (MGA or MGB) engine. A great engine IMHO. What is interesting is the TD 1/14" carb and aircleaner. I don't know how they got it all to fit together.
D. Sander

The engine in the car is indeed the "wrong" engine, it's a B-series engine, most probably the 1.500 cc from an early MG ZA Magnette judging by the smaller SU H2 carburettors with matching manifold (the later Magnette had larger SU H4 carburettors).

D. Sander says: "I don't know how they got it all to fit together". Easy! they didn't use the TD carbs and manifold but used the standard stuff from the ZA.

Interesting.
Somebody should tell the guy what those here believe.
It seems he is making the effort to list correctly.
(note on the auction he has added info that he believes it to be a 1250 from info recieved)
I, for one, commend him on that.
Nice to see someone admit they don't know and make corrections to their listing!

(Unlike the idiot I posted the other day with the VW kit-car on CL that still has it listed as a 1935 MG midget! I KNOW he now knows better...but still trolling for a fish!)

Here's the answer I got when I pointed out that it has an MGA engine and also the wrong transmission:

"this is an all original car and i incorrectly list it with the wrong engine size"

In that case I think this must be the rare MG TE...

It is so sad when I see somebody's recently purchased pride and joy and I innocently point out a problem only to hear them tell me that the prior owner said...
I guess there is a reason car salesmen have a reputation.

Hmmm, how could anything older than the B series have a B engine as factory? That would be interesting! Magic? (Grin). Or am I misunderstanding this whole thing? PJ

Everybody (except the seller) is in complete agreement - this is a very rough TD with an MGA (probably) engine and transmission. There's nothing original about it, and the owner has no idea what he has, or how to describe it fairly. It's more of a parts car at this point, IMHO.

I don't think he did "that bad" ...does have as "GOOD PROJECT OR PARTS CAR" and admitted he doesn't really know much about it. "I'm not an MG person" and seemed he was at least trying to explain the engine when somebody pointed it out to him.

Definitly a better job than some of the wild claims I have seen made in the past on fee-bay.
Including the "all original" TF I won a bid on years ago and flew to Arazona to see a volvo engine in!
(NTS: Never again bid on one without seeing pictures of the engine!)

...well...we have all sent him notes.... will let the final buyer deal with the questions i guess.....
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Wonder what reserve is?
David Sheward

Dear gblawson,

thanx, someone pointed out that it looks like an mga engine.
the engine tag may be an indication of that bp15ga 4076

Yippee I won! ;-)

BP15GA confirmes my guess for an early MG ZA Magnette engine
