MG TD TF 1500 - What holds E-brake pin in cylinder?
Working on rebuild of rear brake cyliner (50 TD). There is a pin that simply holds the emergency brake lever in the brake cylinder body. At rest the outer piston seems to cover the pin thus keeping it from falling out. But what happens when you press brake pedal? That piston moves forward and it seems the pin could just fall out onto the road? What am I missing guys? (Hope I'm being clear. If a picture would help I can post one.) Thanks! |

Ed, I would assume that the pivot pin should be a press fit in either the lever or the cylinder. Cheers Phil |

Nope Phil. I guess mine are worn out? One wonders how they've been there all these years?? |

The piston should only move a fraction of a inch, which will not uncover the pin all the way. To uncover it completely, the shoes would have to be way loose out of adjustment. Also, there is nothing pushing on the pin that would move it anyway. Most I have seen can be pushed out very easily with a finger, pencil, or anything- never seen one pressed in. |

George, that makes sense! I think what you're saying is once the shoes are installed the spring tension pulling the shoes inward keep the piston from moving far enough out to let the pins fall out. If you are correct you've just removed yet another stress from my day! Thanks you very much!!! And yes, my pins came out very easily with a pencil. Great to have that confirmed as OK. Whew! |

Seems to me, until I got them put in place they sort of fell apart? |
