MG TD TF 1500 - What Is This Hole For?

If I remember correctly, this hole is behind the front fender lip, one on each side. There wasn't anything in them on my car when I removed the fenders, so I'm at a loss as to their purpose. PJ

Closer shot.

There is a screw that goes in to the wood that helps to hold the fender on, but this hole does not look like it would hit wood.

I've got the same hole and since I didn't take it apart I am wondering the same. I also have two more in the vicinity. The other side sheetmetal has been replaced so there are no holes.

There's some corrosion and I'll either try to slip some copper behind it and weld it up or, more likely, cut it out and patch it.

I would think that it might have been where a dealer would have attached their (dealership) plate? But it would probably only be on one side, not both.

Paul,
Go to the original mgtf website-gallery of unrestored TF9052-slide 142- I think you will see the wood screw that goes in that hole,

Only problem with the wood screw theory is, there is no wood behind the holes, just metal! Sheet metal screw?? On this car, the holes are only about 1/4 inch deep and then hit metal not wood. PJ

Paul: There are two small round head Phillips sheet metal screws on your fenders that screw into the body. I think the real purpose of these was to keep the piping from slipping out.

Check your fenders and see if they have the corresponding holes. The other one is down by the running board.
Chris Couper

Chris is 100% right. Should be two on each side. Obviously a couple little screws aren't going to do a lot for holding a fender on. More likely to keep the piping snugged into place.

The lack of wood does shoot down the wood screw theory...
