MG TD TF 1500 - Wheel Alignment
Replaced the outer tie rods on my wife's TD and also put on new rack boots and filled the rack with oil (what a mess :-) ). Afterwards, we set initial wheel alignment while the car was still on jack-stands. This worked fairly well if anyone is doing the same. Later, we will run the car through the process suggested by Frank Grimaldi to compare results with the front tires mounted (has been raining in Dallas for weeks and we are not sure if it will ever dry again). People have posted about making very nice alignment jigs they have made over the years. But, this is a cheap and fast method that seems fairly accurate for basic settings before replacing the wheels if you don't have jigs. We used two pieces of straight wood that were 20-inches x 3-inches x 3/4-inch and drilled two holes 8-inches apart centered midway. Ran large nylon ties through the holes and zipped them to the lower brake backing plates so the wood was tight against the backing plates. Took maybe 3 minutes to make and install. You could just as easily drilled larger holes for wheel studs and attached the wood to the drum. Was very easy to make toe measurements/adjustments and we used a laser centered on the wood to check rear wheel alignment and center the steering wheel. Regards, Bill |
