MG TD TF 1500 - Wheel cylinders/brake linings...??

Re- installed the wheel cylinders tonight...but hadn't done any sketches as to how the left/right sides matched or didn't match and which way the linings went on....the manual shows one side only?

Anyway... photos of the finished job (other then the left front...it just didn't seem right.

Gordon - The cylinders look ok to me. The test will be when you go to put the drums back on (since I don't have the drums off on our car, I can't tell for certain. If you can't get the drums on, then the shoes or the cylinders need to be reversed. The right spring ont he right front wheel needs to be placed on the inside hole of the top shoe ("stron holes"). The same is true on the rear brakes, always have the springs on the holes furtherest apart.

Now, before you put the drums on, would be a good time to fill each cylinder with brake fluid (this will involve either taking the cylinders with the pistons down off or removing the brake line from them and using a syrenge to inject fluid into them. This will make bleeding the brakes much easier when you get to that point. If you haven't noticed, the bleeder fittings at each wheel only bleeds the brake lines, not the cylinders and it can be a real bear to work all the air out of the cylinders if you haven't prefilled them with fluid. Gordon.
Before you install the rear drums I would suggest that you use new oil seals. The same applies to the front as I see the inner bearing still in place. This will give you the oportunity to clean and repack those front bearings.

Gordan - the thing to remember for the front wheel cylinders is that the forward one must actuate by pushing downward. You have them on correctly, but heed David's comments about the springs. Also, you need to remove the rf inner bearing from the hub and install it into the drum with a new seal, as Sandy suggests.

Thank you all.... will finish the brake system tomorrow night...have to pick up some copper washers as it was assembled without very many.
Got the Master Cyl back a bit ago... the chap who rebuilt all the cylinders likes to return them "clean"
