MG TD TF 1500 - Wheel plastic

Am always amazed when I start on dealing with 60 year old plastic....

gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Gordon, I'm sure glad my wheel wasn't that bad. Are you intending to re mold the rim or possibly make a wooden rim for it? PJ
Paul Jennings

...a wooden rim....

gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Gordan. Your wood work is fantastic.

Does anyone know what plastic the companies that refinish these use? Probably a trade secret. I searched the internet a while back and could not find any good information on what formula you would use.

It would be reasonably easy to make a plaster mold, but have to nearly be a plastic chemist to know what resins to use.

Wow, isn't that the cats meow! What a gorgeous wheel! PJ

Gordon:
What do you use to remove the plastic from the wheel? As bad as it is it is tough as nails!

I swear, someday, Gordon, I am going to ask you to do a rim for me. Right now, it would only make the rest of my car look sub-par! I've been drooling over your work for a long time!

I use a band saw to cut the outside edge off...right up to the interior rod... then a pair of pliers allows you to twist it off in chunks...Some of it is on like iron, but if the centre rod is really rusted it comes off pretty easily....
What ever was used to harden the plastic seems to just keep hardening ... and the more it hardens the more it shrinks....until it is just shards....

...oh, and the part around the splines you just burn off with a torch....

Gordon:

Glad to see that my Mark II finally got a picture on the Board. At least my steering wheel. Thanks!

The wood wheel has been installed for a couple years now and still looks great. Very pleased with the work done. It never fails to get compliments at shows.

This is the Brooklands rim a friend gave me ... its about 1/2" larger then the stock wheel and makes a big difference in 'easy steering'...
I find the hub a bit large, but like the wheel....

Presume you have pix of all the rims you've done. You should put a "gallery" someplace for all to view, drool, dream, advertise, ....

One of these dayz I hope to commision a custom "GL" wheel for my car!
You sir are a true artist.
I drool everytime I see one of these.
(Then again with as much beer as I drink...I drool most of the tyme anyway. ;-)!

David... I don't drink beer, and I'm noticing a bit myself....damn, damn age!!!!

I do have a website for the rims, although it really is only about 6 a year, if that.... (i like playing with HTML code and websites)...
