MG TD TF 1500 - Wheels and tyres

For those of you pricing materials, I picked up my newly powdercoated wheels ($30.00 each) and took them to the tyre shop for 5 new Verdistiens. Mounted, new steel valve stems (going tubless on these), balanced and marked for best two front, next rears and worst rim for the spare. Out the door $ 472.54. Now if I only had the car done to put them under.

bit more metalic then they should be I think but they will have to do

Now if somebody would come by and help me turn the frame over I could get it finished and off to the coater.

Then I can get to work on the rest of this mess

Dosen't "Kresgin" (sp?) live out there near Palmer Lake? Perhaps a bit of the old "levatation" is in order!
Wish I was closer ..would be there in a heartbeat.

LaVerne,
Where did you get the tires and about how much are they? I need a set for the Healey (picture below). Thanks and have a good day!

LaVerne,

Do you have any sort of formula for the colour you had the wheels powdered coated with?

Is there an equivalent formula code for powder coating such as there is in automotive paint?

I have some wheels I am considering having painted but your powered examples look very eye-catching. Is powder coating likely to be more impervious to drips of brake fluid, which can occur sometimes when bleeding brakes, with resulting damage to paint?

I too would love to drop by to help if I was closer. Don't you have a tractor as I remember?? Maybe lift that frame up somehow and just drive it to the coater:) Yea, fun!

What's a "Verdistien" by the way? Why that choice - curious for future reference.

Wheels look good to me! I like the look. I assume the inside surface looks the same?

John in Utah - was that Healy in Crested Butte a few weeks ago (or does it have a twin)?

Vredestein, spelling correction.
like most stuff, Google it!
Last ones I got were from British Wire Wheel in Cali.
Nice rubber. In "Our" sizes.

"Met Vredestein kunt U tevreden zijn !"

Or; "You can be satisfied with a Vredestein tyre", off course it rhimes in Dutch.
Vredestein was (is ?) our national pride. A Dutch company which made car tyres under BF Goodrich licence.
Unfortunately (?) now it's partly owned by the Russians and there are talks about the entire company being sold off to a company in India....
Their classic car tyres have the authentic thread pattern from the fifties and sixties but are not exactly cheap, even here in Holland.
This is their brochure:

John, Ed,

I had a local tire shop get them for me. $70.00 each. No super compelling reason. Just as Fletch, The five I have on the TF came from British Wire Wheel. Had them put them on when I ordered the wheels and they seem to be holding up well. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. Is that yor Healey John?

Yes,

Fletch I can't spell for beans.

Geoff,
I just asked powder coater for sample chips to look at. I took them out in the sun and chose one. I think this color looks fairly correct in the shade but in full sun light it's to much metalic I believe. I think the coating should better handle the fluids. I had the brake box along with a few other bits on my B done 14 years ago and it's looks like new, but I also use silicone fluid. I had him do the wire wheels on the B back then but I would never recomend anyone do that with wires. The powder will not flow like paint, so you will get rust from the nipple and ferrule end of the spokes. I got ne Daytons shortly after that because the wheels and hubs were shot. I did keep the best of the lot for a spare.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to find a powder coating company here in Pa and check it all out.

This spring I put Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres on my ´63 mgb roadster, in the original 165/80 dimension. It was a big improvement. Light steering, good grip, comfortable and with a superb feel. I hope whoever owns Vredestein in the years ahead will continue to make them just like this.

Good point from Tore. I drive hard and like a lot of grip, but nothing is as delightful as the steering on a good MG with the old style rubber - but not pre radial!

LaVerne,
Yes, that is my Healey! Finally got all the bugs worked out, hopefully, and now for the fun part.
Ed,
No I wasn't in Crested Butte. My daughter goes there quite often for work and I think she wants the Healey so there is a good chance you might see it there eventually. Have a good day!
