MG TD TF 1500 - Where things go
I have been working steady on the car this past month. The headlamp buckets are back from the chromer. The firewall has been painted and the drive shaft tunnel parts were powder coated. I did crack both the inner front side rails (14) trying to get them to meet the Bottom main rails. They (14) were original. The Bottom main rails were replaced 22 years ago. I got new ones and cut spacers out of the cracked rails. The firewall has now been mounted as well as the inner dash panel (17) http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f334/eeengineer1/Inner-dash-support.jpg I had to make a dash top bracket (48) R/H. I am sure some day I will find mine. First question: In the middle of the inner dash panne is a wood spacer support called a Cross piece (15). I can see where the screw on the front edge goes into the front top rail (11) but where does the rear screw go? It seems there should be a block there, but my inner dash piece has a metal reinforcement screwed on with wood screws. (see red Arrow) http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f334/eeengineer1/Middle-dash-support.jpg Next Question(s) I am moving on to the steering and I need some help. On the firewall end of the outer steering column there is an increase in diameter and a flange. I understand that the bottom felt lives there. I assume that the flange is just to hold the felt in place and does not fix the shaft to the firewall. Is this correct and if so what kind of fasteners are used? http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f334/eeengineer1/outer-column.jpg Finally Last two questions; On the inner steering column there is a slot for a key to retain the splined shaft so it does not come off in your hands. (See Arrow) http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f334/eeengineer1/Key-slotarrow.jpg What stops the key from coming out? ( The upper felt?) And upon reinstallation are the felts oil soaked or left dry? Thanks again for your help and insights. Jim B. |

Jim, the hole you have the red arrow pointing to is for the rear view mirror. It goes through the scuttle and through the wood piece. Two screw go through the inner dash into the wood piece. If that is the original you should see the two holes in the end. |

Ah yes. I see the two holes. Now I understand thanks I will work on fixing it tomorrow. I may need to rebuild the holes in the inner dash. Thanks One more mystery solved. Jim B. |

Tiny machine screws/lock washers and nuts hold the flange to the column. There is a clamp and two spacers and a long bolt that fasten it to the firewall. When assembled, the chrome upper adjustor clamp fits over the key and holds it in (tightening it pinches the slit in the column to hold the inner splined shaft in place). |

Jim, There are pictures on my website http://www.dbraun99.com in the steering section (under steering rack) and in the interior section (under interior installation) of both areas of the steering column. The felts are bushings. I greased them. warmly, dave |

Thanks to all, especially Dave. I think I have it now. Remember this car came apart 45 years ago. Jim B. |

Kind of like finding a jigsaw puzzle in your attic. A lot of work, but nice to look at when done. |

Dave: On your sire you mention that you dont know what the brackets on either side of the glove box are for. did you ever find out? I dont have those brackets, at least I dont think I have them. I would have guessed they hold the glove box however. I have been pondering how its fixed. Jim B. |

They are for a radio if you had one. |
