MG TD TF 1500 - whet color fender welt to use (TD)

I'm planning on ordering my upholstery for my restoration . Car was cream with red interior. want to go possibly SSG with the paint. Does the welting match interior color or Paint color. I don't see a gray welting material in moss or AS catalogs. Please advise what would have been proper to use Thanks
W. A. Chasser Jr

Should match the body color.
MG LaVerne

Painted body color is "correct"... but IMHO, I like the contrast and went with interior colure.
My interior was already wrong (black) and I painted my dash black also. Ivory, black interior, and a red dash, just didn't get it for me. (What it was when I purchased the car.)

Wrong, yes ...but I think it defines the lines nicely, and the old black welting that was painted was chipped in several places.

Yes...I know, brass door hinges and stainless post are wrong also...but they polished up so nice and the paint won't chip off them.

Nice looking TF there David. it does accent the car well. Any ideas where to get silver welting without painting it on the car? Is it just vinyl that is bought at the upholstery shop or is it something special. Also I thought I read a thread somewhere that the welting was different sizes on various panels? Was there a welting between the dash and cowl?

Thanks MG Laverne for the info. See above

I think I have seen gray welting on old Lincolns & Packard's....but no idea where they got it. Or if it was painted.
What was on my car was black and painted ...but the car had been resprayed when I bought it.
Think you will find the size info here...under details.

OBTW: I have seen a TF SSG w/red interior and red piping ...looked nice.

For me "black" just made sense with all the other black rubber on the car.
Cowel trim, running board trim, rear tub reflectors, all the black gaskets under mirrors, ect, and black hood (top) and tonneau.

At the time, I was not ready to purchase the Moss interior kit. I purchased 2 yards of material from Moss and took it to the local upholstery shop and had welting for the dash made. I uses the old welting as a sample and the man made mine to match. He only wanted a few $'s but I gave him a tenner.
Normally I would have made it myself, I have a special foot for the old Singer machine that lets the needle get next to the cord, but I could not find the special plug for the machine at the time.
(I just ran across it yesterday, looking for my sons harmonic balance for his 47 Jeep.)

At any rate, if you can find vinyl of the proper color and type you could have it made to suit you desires.

Thanks everyone for your input David that's perfect pic of what I want to end up with I see they chose to do theirs with red welting I've never seen SSG close up to know exactly what it looks like the pic to me anyway looks like it has a bit of metallic in it to shine like that, idk. Anyone who has an SSG car have a comment?? Maybe I'll contact Moss and see if they have the gray material but just don't publish it.

The original Siver Streak Gray (at least in TDs) had a slight green metallic tinge to it. With time the green has probably faded from exterior surfaces. On 'the53' I was able to view it under areas that that been poorly painted black. Bud

thanks Bud sounds like the color on my wheels I'll try to take picture of them and post it

W.A.; Ivory welting is not available for the TD, as far as I know. I ended up making my own, with supplies from the local fabric supply. I used Marine vinyl (it is mould and mildew proof) and 1/4" polyester cording. I had to borrow a sewing machine and learn how to use it ,and all turned out well. The welting is narrower around the front apron, so I sewed the welting narrower and when the cord pulled through it worked out perfect.

I did see that they had Marine vinyl in a silver colour, when I was looking and I know it is available in a number of grey tones.

I used the white, which is actually off white and was lucky enough to get a perfect colour match.

WA, the piping should match the body colour as has been stated above. I used a vinyl that was as cose to the body colour as I could find using the method CR suggests. I then had a special vinyl "paint" colour matched in a spray can. The end result is a perfect colour match to the body. Cheers

Thanks P & CR for your comments. Looks like I will be searching for vinyl at my local upholstery shop. I was going to ask what piping sizes I was Going to need but found that on the Original TD midget Site. What a wealth of information there.

CR, Your car is beautiful. And the colors of the hood, interior and body are exactly as mine was originally. I may have to rethink my SSG idea. Looking at my cowl I thought it was a rather bland color but looking at a fresh paint job all I can say is "WOW" Thanks for sharing that picture.

What I really need to do is find some local T owners and study their cars and take lots of pictures. My car arrived in pieces so I am going into this rather blind being my first TD.

Last time I was near these cars was when I was about 15 years old looking at a TD Mark II that was an unmolested original. Everybody in the MG club would use his car as reference on their own restorations back then The owner was a friend of my dad's and they competed in rally and did Gymkhana with their cars in the '50's with the Sacramento Sports Car Club. I would sure like to know what became of that car. The owners name was Bud McCormick and he lived in Carmichael, CA off of Dewey Ave Unfortunately he passed away many years ago and I don't know what the vin # was to trace it. There was a unique feature on the car though. My had made spun brass disc that fit behind the medallions on the hubcaps and filled in the center area leaving the outer edge chrome exposed similar to the accent edge on the fuel tank side panels
