MG TD TF 1500 - Who made the TD air cleaners
Does anyone know the manufacture of the TD oil bath air cleaners? |

Duh! Give me a little more please. :-) |

"Duh"??? You asked a question and Dave provided you with an answer. I don't understand your response, Chris. Regards, tom |

OK. I figured everyone knows the air cleaners say AC on them ... But what does it stand for? You Google AC and you either get AC Delco or Air Conditioner. AC must mean some company, but I have not the foggiest idea who it is. |

Chris Found this on Wikipedia. Still may not tell you what you want to know, probably doesn't go deep enough. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACDelco Ian TF4056 |

Chris, I don't know, but I think this may be the answer. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_Cars Kirk |

Chris it is indeed A C Delco Made by A C Delco Division of General Motors Ltd. Dunstable England. |

Rod, Your photo seems to put the matter to rest, in my opinion. I considered AC Delco, but naively thought that it was a USA only based company. So, I dismissed it. Thanks for sharing. Kirk |

Albert Champion. |

in reviewing this, I read ac delco was not formed until 1974. Prior to that AC spark plug was the corporate name. AC cars show no record of OEM parts production for other makes..that I could find. Regards, tom |

AC made many filters for many brands. Our 1940s and 50s chrysler and Ford products all have AC fuel filters. The Jaguar E-type also has AC filters. David |

You guys are wonderful. Its amazing how powerful the Internet can be. When you see what happens with Twitter and how off the rails it can get, its forums and teamwork like this BBS and its participants that brings the good out. I will try to sort out the details here a bit more. I too dismissed AC Delco for all the reasons mentioned about but it bears more investigation for sure. |

The actual story on this is so sordid it could be a book on its own. I could never do it justice. Basically the name AC is derived from Albert Champion, a colorful early automotive pioneer and is the formation of AC Spark Plugs, now AC Delco, a part of GM. Where the air cleaners was sourced from is a mystery to date but AC and GM were in the business of selling components to many automotive manufacturers. |

Chris, The MG TD air cleaner manufacturer is indeed AC-Delco. Occasionally BMC made use of AC-Delco as a parts supplier; the AH-bugeye and later MG midget Mk1/AH Sprite Mk2 for instance have an AC-Delco "Sphynx" Y-type mechanical petrol pump. Austin A55/Wolseley 1500 had AC-Delco air filter elements. Just my 2 eurocents... Nick (TD3232) |

There's something in my mind about the export versions of the early Morris Minor using an almost similar air cleaner as the one on the TD (they're also AC-Delco) but I'm not sure... Maybe someone on here knows more ?! Cheers, Nick (TD3232) |

>Basically the name AC is derived from Albert Champion, a colorful early automotive pioneer and is the formation of AC Spark Plugs And before that the Champion Spark Plug company, from which he was ousted. |

Unrelated, I suppose, to the AC of Cobra fame? Jud |

Ac delco did not exist until 1974. Regards, Tom |

Actually Morris Minors circa 1953-58 did use an oil bath air cleaner from AC but it was much larger and completely different to the one on a TD. |

Greetings all Sticking my threppnee bit into this thread, somewhere in the annals of my murky mind, I recall seeing the AC Air Oil Bath Filter Assembly being listed as part # AC-32. Now, I cannot locate my verification for my previous writing, although it must be somewhere in my tome of accumulated articles. Therefore; I'll just pass it along , without proof, to be treated accordingly. Cheers then; respectfully: Jack Emdall, TC6768/TD3191, Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia, Canada |

Tom, AC Delco was formed in 1928. AC merged with Dayton Engineering Labs Co (DELCO). I remember AC-Delco parts in the 1950's. Ray TF 2884 |

According to Graces http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/AC-Delco_Division_of_General_Motors 1974 The merger of AC Spark Plug Sales Division and United Delco Division created the AC-Delco Division of General Motors. The picture is a 1954 ad. During the TD/TF error the air cleaners were just made by AC but look at the bottom of the ad. |
